( part 5 ) Call Mr. Olufsen the epoxy & composites consultant !

Mr. Olufsen is an old friend of our photographer, Bud 'Rollei'.
What he doesn't know about fixing Porsche 917K body-work...
...isn't worth knowing.

Currently semi-retired from life in the FAST lane...
...Mr. Olufsen was called in; to oversee all the composite materials applications, needed to encapsulate the Space Egg R&D Dept.'s low-noise resistor.

Here, Mr. Olufsen directs the process of securing the element and lead-outs to the polystyrene substrate delivered by the placky-shape cutters.

( part 6 ) 1 regular & 3 anti-inductive winding types.

Missed getting a photo of the way the resister was wound.

But looking back at the last photos...
...the loop of resistance-wire was taken twice round the ellipse...
...the winding effectively starting in the centre & flat-wound outwards in opposite directions joining the lead-outs.

Here's a picture of four different winding types.

1. Normal Spiral.
2 .Out & Back
3. Flat-Wound.
4. 'Ayrton-Perry' Winding.

The 'Ayrton-Perry' winding uses 2 conductors & 4 times as much wire, as the others.

The winding we used, is kind of a cross between types 2 & 3.

:D

( part 7 ) Mr. Olufsen suggests some 'matting' before encapsulation.

With the wire-wound, now wound...
...we need some encapsulation, for the component.

It works just fine, how it is, of course...
...but we can't let those jazz-age funky-Professors at Mullard down...
...with a second-rate finish !

The resistance wire is a bit 'springy'...Boooouuinggg !...
...and also wrapped in Teflon...
...which as we discovered earlier; even Gecko's can't stick to !

So Mr. Olufsen with his experience on Porsche 917K bodywork; suggested some 'matting' was added...
...killing 2 birdies, with 1 stone.
Springy resistance-wire :- flattened.
Non-stick Teflon surface :- stickable.

The resistors substrate & element, was covered in fine Polyester thread...
...We used Coats Drima #180...
( a good colour for 'invisible-mending' your jeans; shame about the rips ! )
Saw somewhere, that 'red' is lower-noise ... or something; but we didn't have any, so light-blue it is !

Bud's photo shows one of The Space Egg Corps. R&D boffins...
...Miss. Vero; a cool 70s' chick, for sure !...
...and some familiar lecy bits & bobs, to see how the product is sizing up.

:hohoho:.Ho...Ho...Ho...

" Shut-up beardy ! "

( part 8 ) Gerry's THE MAN when it comes to a painting-plan !

Off next to the paint-shop, for our custom-resistors funky-finish !...

Gerry, down at the paint-shop, encapsulates the resistor, with repeated-coats of Acrylic-Resin...
...then a layer of colour...
...after which, another Acrylic-Resin layer...
...then component marking decals...
...& finally, 1 last coat of Acrylic-Resin.

Jees Gerry...
...you bin busy dude !...:)

The Space Egg Corp. 2012 Christmas Competition WINNER !

What about 56nF (I do have 100's of them all values :))

Hi FdW

YOU JUST WON FIRST PRIZE !!!...

...in the 2012 Christmas competition !

Your original-Mullard 'funky-Professors' lab-coat ; will be in the post to you, first thing on Monday morning !

Sounds like you have quite a large 'shoal' of Tropical-Fish there...
...same here !
They all seem, good as the day they were made.
Could be a good choice for the new preamp !

Used to curse the darn things here; back in the day...
...before we had a digi-capacitance-meter...
...never was QUITE sure, what values they were !
Was pleased when they were phased-out for printed parts.
Now though...
...we miss our little-fishes, swimming around between the other parts, on The Space Egg Corp. boards.

Good to hear you've still got a large-stash from the swingin' sixties FdW...
...the funky-Professors at Mullard knew a thing or two about audio !!!

Cheers.

Si.

Hi FdW

YOU JUST WON FIRST PRIZE !!!...

...in the 2012 Christmas competition !

Didn’t they look great :) I excavated this one from the bottom of the ‘spend-electronics-box’, it was built in 1977 and still looks great (3 way Bessel crossover). (See the odd one out?). (These where branded Philips). (Mustard was never my favorite taste :))

P.s I'm looking forward to receive the lab coat :)

" A dash of mustard with your fish Sir ? "

Hi FdW

Thanks for the Bessel board pic...
...that's gotta be the best dish of fish I've even seen !
Quite an aquatic expert, I'd say.

Yes !...with your clue...we spotted the blurry-blob of mustard !
( must have been constructing during lamb-chop dinner ? )

Those Mullard resistors were a bit of a bitch to ID as well...
...gold-braid on the ends !...and all.
Oh well, back in 77, we had Ohm-meter ( analogue ! ), just no MF digital-meter.

Searchin' the W.W.W for the mysteries of Mullard...
...we happened across a little pic. of our very first TT preamp board !
I figure we got this little baby around 77 as well...
...distinct memories of listening to 'Trans Europe Express' by Kraftwerk, come to mind.
More mustard than fish on the old Mullard preamp board...
...N I C E !
I think we're gonna have to do a teeny-weeny aside story on her soon !
( watch this space, Mullard maniac's )

Cheers.

:D
Si.

PS...sorry FdW, there might be some delay, gettin' your 1st-prize, of the original-Mullard funky-professors lab-coat to you...
...the Board-Directors at Space Egg; have felt obliged to have campaign badges, gold-braid, and tropical-medal-stripes added to the garment...
...in honour of the best-Bessel !

The Directors regret any inconvenience this may cause.

( the swingin'-sixties were never predictable ! )

Hi FdW

Thanks very much !...:p

The '3.9' marking was made with simple 'old-school', rub-down dry-lettering ( Letraset etc. ).
Not needed really...
...just thought we'd go for a nice-appearance for the 'pack-shot' !...

OK...
...just a quick 'resistor-round-up'; for anyone who wants to try their own.
The insulation, winding, encapsulation & lead-out fixing, are all great !...
...we would use those methods again, no probs.

One slight improvement for future resistors though.
All the wire-types we had were 'Nickel-Chromium', and as such, are 'un-solderable'.
The connections to the lead-outs, were tied, wrapped about a dozen times; then crimped ( cold-welded ? ) under extreme pressure.
Although the resistor measures correctly & appears pretty stable...
...we would much prefer the connection to be soldered, for absolute guarateed long term stability...:(
...so...
...off to e-Bay to get some more wire !.:)

The type to look for is 'Copper-Nickel' or CuNi44, also called 'Isotan', 'Constantan' and sometimes 'Eureka-Wire' ( anyone know why ? ).
Anyhow, we are going for some solderable 'Eureka' for the following resistor builds...
...solderable seems a best option here.

I have seen this wire in 100 Ohm per metre & 50 Ohm per metre versions...
...others as well, I think.
The resistors we want to make are all pretty low-value jobs...
...NO we're NOT thinking to do any 1 Meg Ohm ones !!!
Could be a total wind-up !...
...might take a WEEK to construct.
Mmmm...
...Have got 'The Godfather' Part I, II & III to watch though ( 9 hours ! phew ).

Cheers.

:D

All Wire-Wound... Precision... Reverse RIAA Filter.

Hi FdW

Thanks for the PM...:)
oC tropical-fish...
...just my bad joke !
( they don't like wide temp. range ! )...;)

The resistors are all wire-wound.
Mostly ceramic/glass, and some glass-fibre cored.
( we've had a load apart, for scientific-study...VANDAL :wave2s: ! )

Spent the autumn on eBay adding to TSEC wire-wound stash...
We now have enough for a ULTRA low-noise Reverse RIAA filter...
...the 2 new phono preamps & 4 shunt regulators...
...my valve amp Heathkit MA-12's rebuild ( going slowly, but gettin' there ! )...
...another amp project, with Toshiba MOSFET's ( gettin' there, as well ! )...
...a n d...
...a microphone !!!:usd:

The board layout is for the reverse RIAA...
...when the workshop gets above 1 oC...
...we'll cut and drill the board.
( new Teflon experiment ! )...:p

We've got quite a Tropical Fish stash as well !
Nice one FdW !...
These will be swimming their way onto the new phono preamp & shunt boards...
...just drawing some layouts now; quite a few weird-size NOS parts need fitting in !
( Abbey Road EMI Teflon's !!!...let it be...baby ! )...

The wire-wound reverse RIAA is getting matched bunches of Philips Polystyrenes...
...spot on accurate...0% tolerance...ever so slight drift though...
...Mmmm...?
Should I be using silver-mica for a slight improvement here ?...
Dunno...

More news soon...
...drawn board, cut soon as well, I hope !...
( iced-fingers permiting ! )...:apathic:

Cheers

:D

Some potential layouts for the 'Simplistic NJFET'...

Yas...yas...yas...
...another please !...:p

Don't you just love NOS, retro, vintage, freakin' OLD components !!!...
...BIG, weird sizes, NOT bandoliered on tape...
...imported from the USSR ( and obscure counties of England ! )...

Luvin' it !...;)

Here's some potential layouts for the new phono pre...

Workshop's still b£%!&$ cold !...:apathic:
...so we draw now, & cut a bit later ( warmer ! )...
...let me see some Dafodils ( PLEASE !!! )

Cheers.
