( part 5 ) Call Mr. Olufsen the epoxy & composites consultant !
Mr. Olufsen is an old friend of our photographer, Bud 'Rollei'.
What he doesn't know about fixing Porsche 917K body-work...
...isn't worth knowing.
Currently semi-retired from life in the FAST lane...
...Mr. Olufsen was called in; to oversee all the composite materials applications, needed to encapsulate the Space Egg R&D Dept.'s low-noise resistor.
Here, Mr. Olufsen directs the process of securing the element and lead-outs to the polystyrene substrate delivered by the placky-shape cutters.

( part 6 ) 1 regular & 3 anti-inductive winding types.
Missed getting a photo of the way the resister was wound.
But looking back at the last photos...
...the loop of resistance-wire was taken twice round the ellipse...
...the winding effectively starting in the centre & flat-wound outwards in opposite directions joining the lead-outs.
Here's a picture of four different winding types.

3. Flat-Wound.
4. 'Ayrton-Perry' Winding.
The 'Ayrton-Perry' winding uses 2 conductors & 4 times as much wire, as the others.
The winding we used, is kind of a cross between types 2 & 3.

With the wire-wound, now wound...
...we need some encapsulation, for the component.
It works just fine, how it is, of course...
...but we can't let those jazz-age funky-Professors at Mullard down...
...with a second-rate finish !
The resistance wire is a bit 'springy'...Boooouuinggg !...
...and also wrapped in Teflon...
...which as we discovered earlier; even Gecko's can't stick to !
So Mr. Olufsen with his experience on Porsche 917K bodywork; suggested some 'matting' was added...

Springy resistance-wire :- flattened.
Non-stick Teflon surface :- stickable.
The resistors substrate & element, was covered in fine Polyester thread...
...We used Coats Drima #180...
( a good colour for 'invisible-mending' your jeans; shame about the rips ! )
Saw somewhere, that 'red' is lower-noise ... or something; but we didn't have any, so light-blue it is !

...then a layer of colour...
...after which, another Acrylic-Resin layer...
...then component marking decals...
...& finally, 1 last coat of Acrylic-Resin.

Didn’t they look great
I excavated this one from the bottom of the ‘spend-electronics-box’, it was built in 1977 and still looks great (3 way Bessel crossover). (See the odd one out?). (These where branded Philips). (Mustard was never my favorite taste )P.s I'm looking forward to receive the lab coat

The '3.9' marking was made with simple 'old-school', rub-down dry-lettering ( Letraset etc. ).
Not needed really...
...just thought we'd go for a nice-appearance for the 'pack-shot' !...

...just a quick 'resistor-round-up'; for anyone who wants to try their own.
The insulation, winding, encapsulation & lead-out fixing, are all great !...
...we would use those methods again, no probs.
One slight improvement for future resistors though.
All the wire-types we had were 'Nickel-Chromium', and as such, are 'un-solderable'.
The connections to the lead-outs, were tied, wrapped about a dozen times; then crimped ( cold-welded ? ) under extreme pressure.
Although the resistor measures correctly & appears pretty stable...
...we would much prefer the connection to be soldered, for absolute guarateed long term stability...
...so...
...off to e-Bay to get some more wire !.
The type to look for is 'Copper-Nickel' or CuNi44, also called 'Isotan', 'Constantan' and sometimes 'Eureka-Wire' ( anyone know why ? ).
Anyhow, we are going for some solderable 'Eureka' for the following resistor builds...

I have seen this wire in 100 Ohm per metre & 50 Ohm per metre versions...
...others as well, I think.
The resistors we want to make are all pretty low-value jobs...
...NO we're NOT thinking to do any 1 Meg Ohm ones !!!

We now have enough for a ULTRA low-noise Reverse RIAA filter...
...the 2 new phono preamps & 4 shunt regulators...
...my valve amp Heathkit MA-12's rebuild ( going slowly, but gettin' there ! )...
...another amp project, with Toshiba MOSFET's ( gettin' there, as well ! )...
...a n d...
...a microphone !!!
The board layout is for the reverse RIAA...
...when the workshop gets above 1 oC...
...we'll cut and drill the board.
( new Teflon experiment ! )...
