The Benz is less coloured, maybe as neutral as possible. The details are impressing, also the bass.

Yesterday I've built a dustcover for the TD126.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Looking forward to your latest impressions... BTW I agree with your first one :)

Beautifull setup... congratulations.

I am sorry, but I should have taken some pictures during construction.

You know, my work is not perfect: the joints are not completely bubble free.

I just made an improvisation, taking less time than writing this text :)

How I made it:

Purchased ready cutted acrylic glass, 5mm thick and "UHU Hartkunststoff" glue (transparent glue for acrylic glass) and brown parcel adhesive tape.

Dont forget to drill needed holes for the hinge before mounting.

First step:

Apply four stripes of the parcel tape to the cover plate and lay it upside down on the desk (sticky side of the tape on top).

Look my sketch:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Now you put all four sidewalls (piece by piece) on the coverplate, exactly at the mounting position and fix it with the adhesive tape.

You can open now the construction like a flower and all the pieces are laying flat on the desk, joined with the tape.

It is easy now, to apply the glue on all needed joints.

Bend the side parts up, fix the corners with tape and let it dry for 24 hours.

Most important rule: never try to wipe away some glue, before it is dry and hard. When you applied to much glue, it will be on the inner corners and it is easy to cut it away with a sharp knife after drying.

Sorry, I dont want to open a new thread, as I am no expert in Acrylic work. Please feel free to document your own work and open a thread about diy dustcovers.

I just did the mentionned comparison: same tracks from same recording (Fairground Attraction) played from the musicserver via Audio Alchemy DDE 3.0 DAC and switched to the phono.

I strongly can confirm this first impression:

The Benz is less coloured, maybe as neutral as possible. The details are impressing, also the bass.

I could add, that also the dynamics of the Benz ACE SL is slightly better than with the Denon DL103R.

Maybe the bass and also the dynamics with DL103R the could be optimized or will be better on a different tonearm (SME3009IIS2 improved).

In all: the difference is very small but I prefer the Benz, no question.

I will use mainly the Benz and store the DL103R as a backup.

Happy ears

BTW

Doing this comparison, I remember the TD160 was turning a very little bit to fast and could not be adjusted.

Maybe the belt was a little bit thicker than the original.

And this was very disturbing for switching between the musicserver and the turntable.

Different frequency level and timing.

Now, with the TD126MKII, the pitch control is matching perfectly.

I just compared both cartdriges with 220R in the input:

Boahhh, what a difference, specially with the DL103R!

Much more detailled, but a little bit on the thinny side, some body missing.

Imho, also the Benz is winning a little bit with 220R load compared to 150R.

I still prefer the Benz. Overall the sound is more balanced.

Not sure, I would like the 220R load for the DL103R for a long term experience.

Maybe something between 150 and 220? 180...

No no!

The logical way is like this:

Denon DL103 Euro 160 (some people prefer it over the DL103R)
Denon DL103R Euro 360
Benz ACE SL Euro 680

Please keep in mind: I got mine together with a fine turntable and tonearm as a tradein for two revised Quad II, eg. for some diy audio work.

I could not afford to spend 680 Euro for a cartridge right now :)

BTW: a good argument to build the psu asap.

Just for fun.... Some pics of my Benz Riaa with the new outboard psu (hum killer).

I am using two 80VA Toroids (could not afford the R-Core right now) :(

In the Bench I tested the build with a smaller PSU.

I am using Lee´s original board but stuffed with better (bigger) parts.

The shunts are Mean V12 (V12 but using a 47u BG on the output instead of the zoble).

Sounds sublime :) It took me a while but now I believe my component/layout choice is "dans la mouche".

Shinkoh is better than Z Foil for Rload in this case.

Congrats Ricardo, also I'm using Shinkoh for load:)
