Default Best volume control

Hi, I am about to try to build a pre-amp & want to make sure I get the best vol cntrl available.
I had initially thought of the Alps Black Beauty, but that is apparently not available any more.

Definitely need something better than the Alps Blue pot, don't mind stepped resistor attenuators, but it must have more than 24 steps, otherwise the vol increase between steeps is to big.

Happy to go up to around $150 for a unit.

Cheers thanks for any input

The TKD's are good and available, just do a search. Also have a look over in the CTC thread where they were mentioned a few times.

Hi,
Did you think about electronic pot like the Muse chip? Hard to beat and cost less.

Good mixer-desk slide-pot might be a worthy contender - not rotary, but should be some that are very well engineered and within budget (motorized too if you want).

And the mechanical pot doesn't look anything special (hard to tell). I'd suggest something with a reasonably logarithic response down to -40dB or lower is needed

Probably not the best example of a Baxandall volume control, but an alternative for the OP to think about

If continuous assertion is the main consideration, the conductive plastic potentiometers (like Noble, TKD) are the best ... but I regularly use transformers (S&B, Silk, Promitheus, Slagle) as volume control (TVC, AVC) -with low output impedance driver-.

The 1.5-2db step is enough small for me, and TVC/AVC "musicality" outperforms any pots.

My vote for Penny & Giles D22660 1120 / D, 10k log. I don't know what the new models are, but this one sounds great. I use it as the only component between the signal source and the amplifier.

Or, you can go with a digital stepped attenuator:
Preamp Control - Volume, input, mute, remote
