WTB: TAD TD-4001 or Vitavox S2 Drivers.

Any deals is welcome.

It is true that many will not sell to Russia because they are afraid and don't want to deal with prospect of insurance claims etc . I've sent a few items and never had any problems .I always wanted to visit Moscow and drink vodka in Arbat restaurant alas it never happened. :D . TAD4001 vs JBL 2440/1 comes down to what kind of system you want . JBL won't do in 2- way and many examples are simply dead sounding , you need to find a good pair with matching phase plugs and magnet strength. TAD 4001 sucks in tractrix horn IMHO , you need to use horn it was designed with . The prices are going up because Pioneer stopped production and it will be no more.
If you won't find a pair ,in 3 weeks I may have 2x TD4001 for sale but not now.
Cheers, L

Yes, we compaired TAD 4001 to JBL 2441 in a tratrix 300Hz Edgarhorn. There was no argument that JBL was more musical. TAD sounded too bright.

Thank you, guys, Limono, Egindin. What about Vitavox S2 Drivers? I'm searching good drivers for mid freq. ~800-6000Hz., want to use them with Altec 811-90 horns. Also, my setup have:
bass : Aurasound 1808
midbass: JBL 2012H
hi-freq: Raven R2.

Peace, Me.

I'm affraid Vitavox S2 will be even more expensive to get than Tad 4001. I'm not familiar with Altec 811-90 . If it is a wooden version of 811B radial horn with 2" throat Tad 4001 may work well with resistive padding . I could not stand it(4001) in Edgar 340 Hz round horn but in round exponential 290 Hz Jabo horn it was much more fun to listen than Jbl 2440 with 2441 diaphragms on Edgar horn.
It also comes down what kind of music you listen the most. For mostly classical repertoire and opera , also contemplative listening JBL on neutral tractrix horn would be my choice . For more mainstream , jazz , rock , pop electric music and with your horn TAD may have a notch. Not all people prefer tractrix horn even if it is more natural. One more thing at 800hz cross point altec 288c is still a good choice too , especially on altec horn. People chose 2440 because it is more potent and sounds fuller more musical in lower range and can be crossed at 500 hz 6db , but at 800 hz and over Altec may sound more colorful than JBL (it did to me ) .
I'm afraid that you will have to try and see what will work for you. With careful shopping you don't have to loose money in the process. They are all desirable drivers and there is always demand .

My musical choice is : Classical, Jazz, Rock, Disco. I was experience with Altec 290 drivers (with original diaphragm) on 811-90 horns (original alluminium), it was "blatant" sound. After that, I'm afraid to experiment with Altec's. Good to hear, "more musical in lower range and can be crossed at 500 hz 6db" thats all I need.

Limono, what you could say about Vitavox S2?

Peace, Me.

I have never heard vitavox , and now, when everybody wants it I don't think I ever will :)
What I read is that it's a copy of altec 288c with some cosmetic changes to avoid patent infringement. Why does it sound supposedly much better than 288C , nobody knows but I think I read that in it's days it was thought to be inferior to Altec . I can't find anything on 811-90 , did you mean 311-90 with 1.4" throat ? The only reference to 811-90 horn I was able to find is that someone was selling wooden horn with this designation.
Start with TAD TD4001 , it likes big horns and being crossed low , also it needs resistive padding (don't use autoformers etc)which is a good thing if your JBL midbass is direct radiating . You can choke it to death with resistors and it will still have enough of this sort of "electrostatic like and impressive " quality which most people simply love and some can't stand because it isn't completely natural . If it won't work for you , move on to the next level :)

PS Altec 290 is only useable as a "gap fill" driver 500-1k

A lot of people unconsciously follow Romy's steps without taking in consideration how he specifically tailors his system to suit his needs and imagination. He exclusively listens to classical music and basically disregards any other genres. I would imagine that Rock and Disco played on Macondo would sound less thrilling than on Altec 19. If you want universal speaker you got to compromise here and there. For example on Rock band , very electric guitar and noisy music my (now widely disregarded ) Altec 511B simply KILLS Round ,expensive tractrix horn, there is no contest ,you could almost smell the fumes of crack in the club while with tractrix it's like Roling Stones playing New Year's eve concert in White House for distinguished fat fackers in suits pretending that they can rock too ;) How to make a speaker which can do both ??? -I don't know

Sorry, sure Altec 311-90, one mistake and more copy/paste :) What you are mean "next level"? JBL2440? JBL376Be? What about BMS459x?

About Altec's 290 this is true, that can used just like hyper-powerful siren.

I can offer you Vitavox S3, which is a Romy's choice instead of S2 for lower mid.

Very interesting, welcome to PM.
Regards, Pavel.

easy

- one end of room covered with - choose your poison for rock .
- other end of room covered with - choose your poison for everything else

:devily:

whatever - when you tame typical Altec honker , rock isn't so rockish anymore

in any case - Rolling Stones are overrated - just another weight on scale of world's immaturity (pun intended)

All true, but why would anyone want to tame such a beautifully honking honker ???:D

I only brought Stones into the mix because those post hippie fat old bastards with lots of cash now are willing to pay $500 a ticket and another $1500 on leather jacket to "rock" on the concert :apathic:

Ustas
"next level " is an oxymoron i.e next "best driver" you're able to grab until you'll find one which does for you what you want it to do.

I have tried a lot of drivers and horns, Vitavox is wonderful for classical music and is a head above any other. I havent tried TAD 4001, but I had TAD 2001 and I hated them, given I only listened to them on round tactrix horns.
I never liked JBL or Altec that much, but I think I never was able to get a good charged pair of 375s. Beyma and 18sound are very good too. I like them better than TAD in round tactrix horns.
Vitavox are still bieng made and you can buy a brand new pair, you wont regret it. Follow Romys advice...

For that price I will by "spherical oxymoron in vacuum" including vacuum!

Limono, I have seen ebay prices for 2440+2441 diaphragm ~$300, are is right prices? What better 2441 or 2440+2441 diaphragm?

Yes prices on new small run compression drivers are high and if you want to get dizzy look up Japanese GOTO , ALE and in comparison Vitavox will seem a bargain :D
I don't have much experience comparing 2441 to 2440+2441 diaphragm . My 2440 and 2441 dia doesn't sound right (lousy )and I will send the drivers for recharge to Great Plains Audio it only cost $50 each . $300 a driver is a good price where you're going to buy big chunk of alnico driver for that price?.If you have a friend in US you can arrange with him to ship drivers to Great Plain Audio for magnet recharge just to be sure they will be 100%. Bruce Edgar reported some phase plug changes in 2441 during the manufacturing years so you would want driver form the same batch (fairly close) 2440 supposed to be consistent trough all manufacturing period.
There is always an option to buy Truextent beryllium diaphragm for 2440/2441 /2445 for $600 each when you'll be ready financially ;
Official Speaker Repair Site - Orange County Speaker - Home of GLS Audio Be4016 Truextent SSX Beryllium Diaphragm 16 ohm
BUT, I still think that for altec 311-90 horn and ribbon tweeter TD4001 would be the best starting point if you can afford it .Considering that you're not strictly classical music oriented and are using deep , radial horn. Many people still think 4001 is the best there is, so you won't have problem getting your money back if it won't work for you. Good luck . L

I assume that the throat of your altec was /will be modified to 2" diameter
