I have thought the same many times but this is not a strange word for me this time round.
Many times. Because this is operated by American entities, and apparently using the Merriam Webster style of English, liberty is often taken with words. 'Words' that are abbreviations or contractions, that I was unaware would qualify, are commonplace. I thought we were to use recognized proper English. Since I learned the difference, I have done much better.

Merriam Webster is my back up(all my life). I must say in the past 8 months or how long it has been I've been involved with this puzzle, Wordle does indeed seem to be using MW for their library/pool. Canuckle is bonkers with words in my mind. They use brand names and product codes. Wow. Kinda fun and took me a bit to adjust to the additional slang but it is fun!
I saw somebody else get on Cal's written English skills here recently. I thought it was funny.
