Woofer upgrade Boston acoustic T830

Hi,

I need to find an upgrade woofer for my Boston acoustics T830 speakers. I contacted the parts department for BA and they no longer stock the woofers.

I will need an 8" woofer with sensitivity of 90dB 1w/1m. My budget is around 100-150. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

Nikhil

This one has some age but I'm just wondering why you would want to upgrade them, are the foam surrounds shot or did they blow out? Hopefully there just in need of surrounds, they are not difficult to change. These little 3 ways sound very good and balanced as they are. That likely wouldn't be the case if the drivers got mismatched sending the crossovers and cabinet volume off.

As SS4927 said, you should think twice before entirely replacing (vs. repairing). Assuming you find a woofer that's appropriate for the cabinet volume, it's very likely the crossover will need work after a replacement.

+3 If it's only that surrounds have deteriorated (very common), then re-foaming them makes the most sense - be sure to replace all surrounds at the same time

While you're at it, see if you can dig out the XOs to inspect for damage - it's not unknown for drivers to get blamed when a fried attenuation resistor or blown cap is the real culprit.

On the other hand, if it's toasted voice coil(s) - then you've got more of a problem. While without all the specs the original drivers and XO schematic it'll be pretty tough to find an exact match/drop in replacement, there are likely DIY drivers that could be shoe-horned into the existing enclosures, and "work" in the sense of moving air etc. Just be aware that an exact match in sensitivity is only one of the T/S parameters which the XO would have been designed to consider, and that no matter how tolerable the results of such a "fix" might be, any potential resale value would be lost - they'd only be suitable for salvage of individual parts.

Here are a couple sites to get new woofer surrounds. I wouldn't suggest any 8" replacements that will fit. Not all surrounds are created equal, some being thinner and lighter, some having more or less resistance. You want the cones to avoid any kind of side to side movement otherwise the voice coils might rub and lead to costlier repairs (or the trash bin). The surrounds also act as a shock absorber in a sense. And being that the T830s have sealed enclosures this may be of even more importance. Too much or too little will also alter the drivers Qms perimeter and effect there sound enough that they may become less favorable. I'm not a pro its just what I've gathered from doing my own repairs. So feel free to take with a grain of salt.
