hi - some DIY amps have 90-degree angle cables in mid-air! Are they done using stiff solid core cables?

Naim has been doing this for many years. You can either use solid core or multi-strand wire (as long as the strands are stiff enough/ large in diameter).
I am not an engineer, but can imagine that solid wire is only a good idea if you make your design vibration proof ('floating' PCBs, RCA and power inlets not directly fixed to the chassis etc.) . Otherwise it's always a good idea to cross cables and not run them in parallel (unless they are well shielded).
