Hello
A while ago i bought some 12 Volt D-amps, SMSL SA-36 and Scythe Kamabay.
The Bass was really bad in comparison to my Harman/Kardon amp from ebay, it had no detail and two kicks were one lumpy one with the 12V amps.
Now i have a SMSL SA-50 D-amp (24 Volts) and this has superb bass with all Detail and Punch, it is overall one step behind the H/K but good enough.
My question i would ask here ist if anyone knows if there is a design failure in the 12V amps or is the 12V driving voltage itself too small to drive a detailed and somewhat punchy bass ?

The bass needs most of the power and 12 volt are a little bit less.
Amplifiers with H-bridge configuration have 4x the power. They are sometimes used in cars.

An unbridged 12 V amp can only, even under ideal conditions, produce a maximum of 18 W into 8 ohms (double that into 4 ohms), while a 24 V one can produce 72 W into 8 ohm and 144 W into 4 ohm. It has nothing to do with class D - it is just the same situation with class AB. As udok pointed out, bridging is used in car amps to overcome this limitation.
Another possibility is that the amps you're buying aren't great at bass, because they're ineptly designed... I bought a cheap 12V Tripath amp off eBay a few years ago and it had, quite literally, no bass. Taking the thing apart, I realized... 0.1uF DC blocking caps, 10K input impedance... 1/(2*pi*R*C)... 1st order highpass at 160Hz!
Bodged on 1uF caps and had bass again.

Damn ... i do not have the 12V Units anymore, i sold them or send them back.
So i cannot look inside.
But that one was from SMSL could it be that they make such a mistake in the input ciruit ?
The SA-50 is such a great one ^^
