Jeez just read this post and out of 6 amps suggested I've got (or have recently had) 3 of them and I haven't heard any 🙁

I have a Quad 303 and a pair of 33's to with it. A little noise comes through but no volume.
I had a Leak Delta which I gave to a guy that assisted in my getting a Bush Radiogram back to life.
And I have a Sugden which blows a fuse if I switch it on.

No experience in electronics and, unfortunately no spare cash to have them professionally repaired so they sit and wait down the shed until either I find some big stash of cash or I learn electronic fault finding to a level that doesn't get me electricuted when I dive in. 🙂

IMO the Quads were only any good with Quad E/S speakers. A friend of mine had one coupled to a pair of B&W DM2's (yes it was a while ago) and the result was disappointing.

I believe their was a mod for the 303 to improve its performance with standard speakers.

How far is Newmarket from Solihull, I'd be happy to have a look at them for you. I only do it as a hobby so you'd only be paying for the bits used.

It's around 50 miles straight down the A14 past Kettering, Cambridge and before Bury St Edmunds. There's always some goodies in the shed that are available for a reward/thank you. And if I know whats wrong I can then look at getting the bits to fix.

Sorry for the slight Hijack but if the fix is done then I can definately answer the OP's question with full knowledge 😉

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with single rail and in some ways it is easier to get track layout and decoupling right. It does have the huge advantage that the output capacitor gives pretty reliable speaker protection against an output device short circuit.
Just remember that many of the vintage designs were intended for 8-15 Ohm speakers and have appropriate valued output capacitors (and SOA protection)

If only very large caps did not have such high distortion and our modern "improved" speakers did not insist on dropping below 4 ohms. Of course, talking vintage, they were trading big expensive and very distorting transformers for "just caps", so it was a step in the right direction. In the vintage era, we were not talking 200W either.
