Which FR enclosure for a classical music lover with a Mark Audio Alpair 12pw?

Hello all,

Being mostly a lurker on this forum since quite some time, I found I could attempt to make a pair of loudspeakers for the living room. I have a pair of Quad ESL57 electrostatics that behave much better in the man’s cave (an attic in fact) and also an “adapted” (or reviewed) pair of Acoustic Research 3a “bookshelf” speakers. Driven by refurbished Quad 303 amplifiers, rather old school I suppose. I’m most into classical and baroque music with also jazz combos and occasionally a more popular kind of music. So, I’m not in search of earth-shaking bass, even for the wind organ music I occasionally like: rather undistorted than blowing the windows out. To be honest, I admire the way the electrostats render a classical organ. Getting out of the old school attitude, I very much like the SMSL AO200 MkII class D amp. I used to think of class D amps like “The horror! The horror!” But that was with cheap and less cheap boards from AliExpress, the Bay, etc.

As I asked previously about a WAF-compatible design for additional speakers (issues with the Missiz not yet sorted out), Dave (planet10) suggested to combine the old Kelly horn ribbons I received from someone with Alpair 12pw drivers. So, I succeeded in acquiring a pair and am now looking forward to do something sensible with them.

I haven’t built a loudspeaker box since the 1970s so I am tempted to make FR boxes w/o crossovers according to the plans still provided in Mark Audio’s archive or Scott’s (Wodendesign) plans. There are still other resources. Being experienced in electronics doesn’t mean you’re good in acoustics. So, a steep learning curve ahead. Reading a lot of stuff at this very time. The idea is to bulld an FR box before attempting to add a Kelly ribbon tweeter.

So, after this (too long) introduction, are there any opinions about the available cabinet plans for the 12pw? As a certified furniture maker I’d think I would be able to do cabinet construction reasonably well. I could do them all, of course, even if it will eat an important volume of my (pre-2022) birch plywood stock.

Thank you for any advice!

We did this design for a fellow who did mostly classical: The A12pw could be pushed near the bottom, and you could experiment with the Decca by flipping it upside down and plopping the tweeter on top before committing to putting it in the baffle,

But with the floorstander you could just mount the ribbon in its one box on top.

Of course there is Joan the FH, or Pensil, or any number of variations of Scott's ML-TLs
