What's going on with the plague of narcissism?

My GF/fiancé out of the sudden started to use the word "narcissist" a lot. I open You Tube and it looks like it's the latest buzzword. All the talking heads and healers (mostly females) are busy with giving advice how to deal with those pesky Narcissists. Even (well not surprising) BBC took a notice. I remember safe spaces and Micro Aggressors a couple of years ago and it looks like they were all "neutralized " Now it's time for Narcissist.

So you looked for something on the internet and found it. Well blow me down with a feather...

I tried the same and found a woman's hour series from March this year and an article from 2019 on the BBC. Hardly an epidemic and as far as I can tell nothing new as . So I have to ask why the thread
Are you on PFM too Billy? You sound like it.

If you search Google for "will house prices rise", you'll find that house prices are going up, if you search "will house prices fall", you'll find out that house prices are falling; the internet tends to tell you what you want to know, add in confirmation bias, then anything can be real. Words come into trend, and fall out again, "bruh" seems to have peeked, a few years ago it was "impacted" and "quality". Victim-hood has become the fashion, casting real victims into the shadows.

It's pretty old news that narcissism is on the rise: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5783345

Empathy is declining too.

So we have some evidence that the fall of the USSR increased German narcissism, and perhaps more widely if those results can be extrapolated. The authors' conclusion (per the abstract) is that it relates to collectivist vs individualistic societies (taking laws/political structure as proxy). I wonder if you run an alternate simulation, maintaining East Germany's general Cold War economic structure but give them West German media and eventually the internet (and make sure everyone has all the tvs they want), do the two also converge? The question is how much of the increased narcissism and decreased empathy derives from a reduction in shared experiences? Once, there were 3 channels on TV and no VHS players. You watched the same shows and movies as everyone else. Cable tv comes and we're all bowling alone. Now, we can just watch bowling videos alone.
