I'm sure a lot of car audio subs fit the description but i'm not sure if they sound any good for home audio. Does anyone know of any made for home use?
This seems to take the cake as far as 8" subs go IMHO, but unfortunately it IS a car sub. Don't know how it would sound (other than loud) at home. Most of the serious home stuff is larger dia.. Certainly looks durable though😱 . Looks capable of launching a mortar round.

Who makes those? and how much are they? (audiobahn?)
It's interesting that the mounting holes are only at the back of the plate.
They kind of look like those apple imac mini speakers... except 50 times bigger

that's the JL w7... www.jlaudio.com
it's around $500 if I'm not mistaken...
also the surround covers the mounting holes for a "clean" look
I came across it here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5790843070&category=18802&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1.
Calling it an "8" might be a stretch. Its more like a frameless (or strange frame) 10. Its the sort of "over the top"ness that makes car audio, well, car audio. . Driven with enough power and some serious eq, it might make a decent home sub. Plus you could use it for weightlifting, so it would serve a dual purpose.😉

Why is it you need a high xmax 8" in the first place, can't afford the room space for anything bigger/better?
well it depends on your definition of durable, and high xmax, but if your budget permits then one of these might be ok 😉 http://www.audiotechnology.dk/iz.asp?id=4|a|125|||

yeah well I did say depends on your definition 😉 and it will do 32mm peak to peak which is double the xmax, but obviously non linear 🙂
Tony.
The W7 is definately a serious driver and the price will reflect that. JL also has home subs based off of the W7.

It depends on what you actually want to use it for. If it is for sub purposes only the JL audio will win, I assume. If there is some midrange reproduction expected as well then the Flexunit will be better. I use one of the latter (with custom parameters) in my Manger boxes.

Well yes some midrange reproduction would be expected. I doubt that i'll actually be able to do this any time soon (due to the cost) but the only reason i was asking about a robust 8" is because i think it would be cool to use a very small sealed enclosure (made of thick steel maybe) and EQ the bass (ELF or BASSIS type) and use the ATC mid with some sort of ribbon on top. It could be used as a really small yet abnormally powerful near field monitor. Especially if actively amplified with say a few hundred solid state watts on the bass, OTL on the mid and highs (single ended for the ribbon) it would also sound abnormally refined.
