depends on which sort of overdrive you prefer ... each sounds another ... i often used the "sovtek / electo harmonix big muff" in combination with EMS Synthi AKS it was somehow special that's why i mention it ... there are tons of schematics in the net about the big muff ... just do google for them ...

no kind of guitar ... i used distortion only for creating sounds for the digital sampler or even during playing synth phrases ... but since a few years it came much simpler ... add your plugin into your sequencer software and route the foldback effect from your mixing console to the guitar ... that also works when playing on live concerts ... only add programm changes by your feet to change overdrive effects via midi ... The advantage of computer aided effects ? You have a huge library ...

I think there is so ultimate schematic, each one is different.
I suggest ask uncle google.
But... in my very humble opinion one of the best (considering non-tubes devices) is FlexWalve by Crate, you can find it in U.S patent 5,032,796. It is easy to build, and I can give you some tip, when you look at the schematic try to change zener diodes to 5,1V/1,3W (BZX85 series), and gain of each stage should be within 20dB. Not more, then you would be able to produce lots of even harmonics, and the picking style of playing will affect to the sound a lot. And it gives very good "illusion" of real tube dynamics.
I would also consider the VOX style pre- and post-equalization. It means the you must roll-off the low frequencies at about 600 Hz, you can do that only using input capacitor, its easy and effecitve. To get high gain just use cascade stages. I prefer four stages, and passive tone control - because of high output.
