Volume control for Naim 140 kit?

The volume control is a potentiometer that varies the signal voltage from the preamplifier to the amplifier input. Nobody but those with small distributed PA systems varies the volume at the speakers, because the power level is many times greater and requires much more expensive components, whether they are high power potentiometers or multi-tapped transformers.

The better volume controls are buffered with amplifier stages before and after, as part of a preamplifier circuit but many people try to go cheap and ultra simple, using just a plain potentiometer, nothing else, but usually get poor sound.

Google "passive volume control" and see the quality (or not) of discussion.
