Had a call from a good friend in the DFW area. He has a pair of Apogee Slant 8s and one of the woofers has gone open. It's a Vifa M22WR-09 which handily is no longer made. So first step is to see if there is anyone around who still replaces voice coils, preferably in Texas. Anyone know of anyone?

If that fails we have the fun of trying to find a modern match that won't require major redesign of the crossover...

Not exactly in DFW area, but it looks like they can turn it around in Florida: Speaker Exchange - Speaker repair, replacement, recone, refoam, parts and diy kits.. They advertise that they handle Vifa. I haven't done business with them, so I can't make recommendations.

Most of the reconing/driver and crossover rebuilding businesses in the DFW area have apparently long since gone out of business. The rebuilding/parts businesses that have survived have apparently migrated to web-based ads with UPS/USPS turnarounds.

Well,,, the net result of grafting any aftermarket voice-coil onto an existing speaker-cone will be a woofer that has unknown characteristics ( no matter what any reconer would have you believe ).

As such, one might as well start searching for a replacement driver ( using this woofers TS parameters for guidance ).

Another approach is to buy a replacement from the used market ( some googling found a couple of 1/2 decade old offers to sell, that seemed to have gone no-where >> ie; they might still be available ) .

Additionally, there's currently a pair of Vifa M22WR-07 on eBay UK. ( they might the worth "shot-in-the-dark" gamble )

I have no idea how the "-07" model is different from the "-09" model .

It seems to be the same diameter.

Problem is that 6 Ohm woofers are not that popular. I can't find any specs on the M22WR-07 which is a shame. And like you I noted that for sales dried up about 10 years ago. There are some out there, but hard to find!

The realities of the situation really aren't very good for your friend.

Those realities will certainly test his commitment to these ( hybird ) ribbon speakers.

He may want to join the Apogee User Group to see if others have a solution in hand.

Out of interest I looked for woofer substitutes & I didn't find any ( at least to recommend ) that wouldn't involve major reworks to both cabinets and networks.

Finding an 88db, 8in woofer in 6 ohms, with @ 30Fs having @ 36 gram mms, along with the proper Qts numbers ( and all with a 2" voice-coil for some decent power handling ) was a no-go.

Those parameters are quite a lot easier to obtain in a 10" woofer size ( fyi ).

Maybe if your friend goes without his speakers for a few months he'll soften to the brutal realities ( & consider modifying/hogging out the backs of those cabinets to fit in some 10's 😱 or twin 6.5" woofs ) .

He already did look on the apogee user group. Called up the nearest repair guy and I think has been tempted by a set of freshly restored Calipers. This is good as means I can tempt him to do the right thing and convert the slants to full OB. I have smaller hybrids and that is the path I am (sloooowly) heading down.
