Hello All,
Poking around in DIYaudio I find that several people, mostly SY, are talking about “VIRTINS Multi-Instrument” software. I thought, okay so what you can make your soundcard into some sort of bench multi-tool something like NI Elvis.
I visited the VIRTINS Multi-Instrument website and found that the software packs a lot features. The eye opener is that, the “standard data acquisition software interface specification”.
Attached to my bench computer I have a National Instruments PXI box full instruments; including a 6 ½ digit DMM and 24 bit DAC / ADC card. It is a steep learning curve getting MatLab working with the NI devices.
VIRTINS has done all the heavy lifting, there is a full on set of applications
built in.
I am off to try out VIRTINS.

Is anyone using this software?
Are you using a sound card?
Are you using other hardware?
What are your results?
Thanks DT

I'm interested as well. Here is the web site: Multi-Instrument, a powerful multi-function virtual instrument software - Virtins Technology I would like to hear from others who have used it. The UI is a real issue for this stuff. For example HPW-Works is very powerful but has a difficult UI for me.
Not as simple as Plug and Play.
Hello,
I sent an email to ask VERTINS about the compatibility of their Multi-Instrument software with National Instruments DAQmx devices. I named three of the NI devices that are connected to my work bench PC:
National Instruments
PXI 4070 DMM
PXI 4461 24bit ADC DAC (a sound card, sort of)
PXI 6229 Multifunction DAQ
They sent me this response:
Dear Mr.,
Thank you for your interest in our products. There cards are supported by MI but not configured yet in the software's ADC/DAC database. You can configure it via [Setting]>[ADC Device Database]. With the NI DAQmx device connected, the "Auto Detect & Fill" button in the dialog would help you to fill up almost all the parameters required in the ADC Device Database.
Best Regards
My impression is that it is possible For DAQmx devises to work with VERTINS Multi-Instrument software; however it will not be as simple as Plug and Play.
It will take some effort.

That's actually good news. Especially after you check on the cost for NI software. And its far less of a DIY project to get useful data from it. It seems you need the $500 version though to get the DAQ capability.
I would like some input and screenshots if you have had some success either with soundcards or DAQ.

Even better news
Hello 1audio,
Yes it is very good news. The NI audio testing software is thousands of dollars too rich for my interest. Then that price is for an annual subscription. I asked for an academic discount, NI said no. MatLab does sell their academic package for a huge discount.
Even better news, yesterday afternoon VERTINS sent to me the configuration file to connect Multi-Instrument software to the DAQmx NI PXI 4461, 24bit ADC DAC sound and vibration card.
I will attempt to get the parts connected and functioning in the morning.
I will report any success

Hello,
Partial success so far.
I upgraded to Windows 10 after being frustrated with Win 8.1. I put all the National Instruments PXI cards into a new chassis, upgraded all the NI drivers and successfully ran all the NI self-tests. Multi Instrument software is installed. Now I need to replace the original instrument configuration file with the new PXI 4461 config file provided by MI.
More time later.

Why is it that a short list of "simple" computer setup tasks can take so very long? I have watched hours go by installing software like those.

Hello it was a pain installing all the other DAQ hardware plus the other NI software to get the the NI4474 connected and speaking to the windows computer. Then there was the learning curve of the Virtrins software. After all that there is not much of a user community to work and share with.
I moved on to QuantAsylum 401 to QA 402 and now QA 403 on one work bench and APx555 on the other. The QA402/QA403 if you can find one is affordable and works for 98% of everything that you can dream up to measure. Plus there is a large group of users to share with.
I just last month took all the NI cards out of that computer so my wife could use it at her desktop for online stuff.

I have managed to make ni 4474 work with Virtins mi,but the software are not that amazing at all.
The ni card measures 48ksp 32k shorted input about 134dBv.Great compared to a sound card--but not in the same liga as qa403.
If the qa 403 could work with spectraplus it sure would be fine.
If you need spectraplus mail me hardyhansen--mail-tele-dk.
Greetings
