- Is it possible to get a backloaded 18" driver from 40Hz to around 150Hz with 100dB or more efficiency? (In a bass "scoop")
- Is the subjective bass quality tight and clean?
I have actually read around the internet quite a bit on this subject but I haven't been able to answer these questions.
Usually I'm all for OB bass but horns have grabbed my attention recently, namely due to their high efficiency.
I don't require deep bass but I love 'punchy' and 'tight' bass, which horns are said to be renowned for and I would love a system that was 100dB from 40hz-20,000hz
(Don't worry about putting huge effort into answers this is all mere speculation on my part at the moment)
Hi
Check out Audiogon listing of Edgar Horn mid bass (sold) .There is a picture of dual 18" BLH built by JohnK (John Kalinowski) It will give you an idea of how big those bass towers are . John is very friendly and helpful ,I 'd shot him an email .My EV Patrician IV sporting 18" is twice the size of my bachelor fridge . (a little bigger than double door fridge) .

How well would scaling this up to fit a suitable 18" driver work:

Hi,
How about this Rog Mogale designed scoop (18" driver):
http://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=18superscooper
Rog has caveats for scoops muddying midbass just where the driver direct radiation starts to rise and mix with the horn output.
I have built 15" scoops in the past and was quite satisfied. It should be mentioned that I used my scoops below the supposed "trouble range" in the upper midbass.
Se this JBL document for typical scoop response curves:
http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/Low_Frequency_Enclosures2.pdf
It can be seen that everything is fine under ~100Hz then comes the "trouble range" as mentioned above.
