My 10 yr old son decided that for his scientific fair project he wants to build a pair of 7" Munny Doll speakers, as per PE instructions. For this project PE uses the Dayton 2-1/2" FR ND65-8 (4 Ohm version also avail.). Apparently it fits perfectly, and the specs on this little driver are too good to be true, 80Hz - 20kHz, though Sensitivity is 78.3 dB; most of the other drivers in this category are around 110+ Hz to 18+ kHz, and 82+ dB. The other thing is that the baffle cutout for the Dayton's is 2.05", while for others is closer to 3", flange dims. is also small for the Dayton, and I don't know if the Munny Doll head will hold a larger driver.
The drivers are $19.30 ea. (they better be good). I was thinking that for around $40.00 I can buy other less expensive 2-1/2" drivers, and buy a 6" Aura Woofer (PE Buyout), and for around $30.00 worth of drivers, have the doll PC speakers, and a "subwoofer" (maybe passive), powered by the same Dayton DTA-1 T-Amp that will be used to power the speakers.
Any recommendations, as far as driver goes? This is a project that will be done by a 10 yr old, so needs to be simple, but at the same time exciting for him. Your input is appreciated.

Take a look at vifa tc7fd 2.5 in driver. Or get a logitech s120 pc speaker and strip out the two visaton lookalike frs5 drivers.

That Dayton driver is a smaller version of the Aura NS3. I'd get the 3" version on sale at Madisound.

I have looked at this Munny doll before and the problem is the head of the doll won't accommodate the 3 in ns3 which is a way better deal. The s120 driver looks like no TB I have seen with the two tab mounting holes just like frs5. I agree that logitech uses TB on larger speakers in the 3 in size.
Thanks for your help...It looks like I will keep the Dayton, the fact that they advertise 80Hz - 20kHz range is simply amazing for a 2.5", bass king in their size, just like the suggested Aura is in 3". When you look at them they are designed like a subwoofer driver. Yes, efficiency is low in general, but don't want a 10 yr old blasting music around the house, so it is not that bad.
Let us know how the Munny doll speaker works out and post photos. Have you considered a BR ported Munny doll? Fill the doll with water and measure the volume (enlarge the neck and use the body too (possibly). Run a BR program and calculate the vent. Where to put the vent? A vent shaped like a big fat cigarette is not appropriate for a 10 yr old 😉 Maybe a top hat?
Great idea! I don't smoke myself, though every other month or so I smoke a couple of good cigars, so modeling a cigar/cigarette as a vent wouldn't have occurred to me. Back in my college years the vent would have been...Let's leave it there....🙄
Update: Yesterday I ordered the dolls. Really "cheap", 😱, at $20.00 each, plus USPS Priority Mail freight; $50.00 total. Today I ordered the drivers from PE, plus an extra pair of TB W3-881SI, a pair of TB W4-1364SA, a pair of Aura NS6-255-8A woofers (Buyout price), and some connectors, braid, shrink tubing, etc. that I needed. The darn PE order was like a trip to Costco to buy a $12.00 item; you always buy $100.00+.
I will try to post pics of my son working on his project. He already knows that he will paint them to look like a cyclops wearing a racing goggle.
Just learned that the scientific fair is at the end of April, so plenty of time to buy him the DTA-2 T-Amp and necessary components, so he can build his own amp in a wooden or plastic project box with a plexiglass, or similar clear plastic, top.

That's going to be a neat set of speakers for a ten year old. How do you get speaker building a Munny doll to be a science fair? The trick to getting in and out of Costco is to not grab a shopping cart, you can only buy what you can carry in one hand! 🙂 The name of of the store should give you a hint.

1. At school my son has to participate (obligatory) in their Science Fair. It involves researching a science topic (biology, chemistry, engineering, etc.), then they do a project board with the information regarding the theme of their project, and an experiment to prove their project. A couple months ago my son had seen the Munny speakers while I was browsing Parts Express, he said he wanted a pair. So, when he was told in science class that they had to develop a project or experiment for the fair, he immediately said he wanted to talk about how music is transmitted thru speakers, and he would build the Munny speakers. There is much more about it, he has to learn about how sound is recorded and played using electrical signal. Obviously, only the basic stuff. Then he has to develop a project board detailing the info he researched and the build.
2. Love the hint! The bad thing is that 5-7 minutes from home I have Costco, Sam's, Sears, JCP, Walmart Supercenter, Home Depot, etc. Not easy.
3. Extremely complicated politics, it would take a 500 page thread just to explain and for people who know about the subject to chime in. In short, PR was a colony for Spain, then early in 1898 Spain was going to grant PR sovereignty. But, in 1898 the Spanish-American War broke out, which the USA won. USA invaded PR, but found no resistance and locals were actually quite helpful and friendly; easy pickings. Spain lost to the USA the Philippines, Guam, Cuba, and PR among other colonies. Because the war was basically against imperialism, political forces in the USA, among them Mark Twain, were vocal about the USA being careful of not becoming an Empire. So, most were granted independence or some form of independence. But, PR was kept as a war trophy, because of it's strategic location as a door to the Caribbean, Central, and South America. Governors were appointed by Congress, sometimes a general, though a civil government was established in 1900 when Congress passed the Foraker Act. In 1948 we had our first elected governor, and in 1952 we officially became the "Commonwealth of Puerto Rico". Basically a State without powers. We have our own constitution, but he US Constitution overrules ours. We have a State government, but also the US government institutions. We pay Social Security and Medicare, and receive the benefits, though we pay the same rate we receive less. We have a non-voting representative in the US Senate, who is part of major commissions. We are born US Citizens and have US Passport.
In short, think of PR as a non-official State without all the benefits of a State.
