upright mounting for temp issues

Hi

I, being a beginner, wonder about almost everything one can wonder.
While in the process of building a B1 Mesmerize, Salas writes (in the context of "security reason(heat)"):

…Just mount MUR120 standing upright with a little space from one body end to board, 2mm

Sounds perfectly logical. So, why isn't this technique used much more often? At least in Class A projects? Could be a standard, since the height can't really be a matter in most cases?

Upwright mounting is good because it takes less space on the PCB. But horizontal mounting is easier and more reliably (with vibration etc). So it has it's cons and pros.
