Turning an old Philips Radio into a Wireless Radio

Hey everyone,

I found this old philips portuguese radio on a fleamarket, and Im planning on changing the speaker to a better one and put it to run of a raspberry pi.

My main questions are:
- How do I find a speaker that fits with the same size
- What kind of speaker would have a good balance of range, being a mono speaker.

Thank you, any initial pointers would be awesome! 🙂

Have you listened to the speaker/radio cabinet combination? They are probably pretty well matched for your purpose.

Is the radio cabinet open backed or sealed? The Visaton should work well if your cabinet approximately matches the optimum cabinet volumes given in the specs.

It is sealed close, but a thin plastic.

Ohh, I just measured the volume of the radio, it has a

base of 10cm, height 19cm, width 30cm and the top side is 8cm.

Giving a total volume of 5120cm^3.

Where do I find the information about the volume of the box on the datasheet?

thank you

If you are not experienced in matching enclosure volume to the specified parameters of the replacement driver, then you would be best to stick to the original driver.

Again, have you listened to the original driver/cabinet combination?

The Monacor is going to play a little lower than the Vista in that radio box. The Vista is more efficient. If you don't like the sound of the original driver, try the Monacor as it should be more fullrange.

I have used 4" and 5" car speakers in things like this to good results. Really good value for money.

I would change just the raspberry pi but keep the speaker if it is still working without issue. There is a certain kinda romance in the sound with these guys. Plays well with songs from yesteryear. If you just want hifi sound, might as well build one from scratch.

I did something similar to an old antique radio from the 50s. Built an amp with a frequency response that slowly declines after 6kHz. Sounds gorgeous with music from that era, definitely a certain feeling of romance with the sound.

That is also a great idea!

Need to get the driver working, remove all the old electronics (which are really pretty).

Created an album for the radio project here:

Yeah, that's the project for the weekend!!
Put it together and decide what to do next.

I am planning on using a raspberry pi, it would also be nice to convert the dial into a volume or something like that! Let's see how this goes!
