Many people are buying the fresnel lens and triplet lens from DIY Labs, but couldn't you just buy a broken OHP, rip off the fresnel and the projection lens off that?
The fresnel + triplet lens will run you $70 USD shipped, but you can get an OHP with a broken ballast for $5-$10, and have the seller only ship the projection lens + fresnel for some really cheap shipping. Or you could find an equivalent ohp locally and pull the same deal.
Would the projection lens from the ohp be no good with a custom lighting setup (400w MH) ?
Also, would the light from this light be too diffused to use for this project?

I would think it would be a good candidate, because it does have a semi-spherical reflector.
The only problem I can think of is too big of a diameter. I will email and ask the guy what it is.

Diy labs have a reasonable deal. Perhaps you could find something similar for a cheaper price at http://www.surplusshed.com/ but you'd be lucky to.
It really depends however. What size lcd will you be using? 14" or below and sure, get a broken OHP and use the optics, if its 15" though you'll need the diylabs fresnel or one just as big.

If you want to experiment with a big time HID it's a possible source.....however you can find them cheaper locally. I used to live in Ontario, I know there are building wreckers all over the place (Teperman is one of the biggest). If you pay $40.00 USD then another $30.00 USD for dellivery...plus customs...plus.... I found quite a few lights just like this and some better for anywhere from $25.00 to $75.00. No dellivery...no customs.....no tax even, if you find the right guy (if ya want a reciept it'll be 45 bucks...no reciept?.....I dunno...how's a case of beer sound?) Hint.....go on a friday afternoon with a box of beer in the trunk ready to make a good deal..and some new friends 😉
PS I've found the better bulb maker for these bad boy's is "Sylvania" the light seems "cleaner"
