Interesting question. May I ask for clarification?
1. Why 8 inches specifically?
2. How do you feel about whizzers?

Because i have a hi eff DIY dipole and the 8 inch midrange from 300-3000 Hz is the bottleneck.
AELO15 woofers are around 99 dB (16+16 ohm) or even more with parallell voice coils. Radian 475pb-Be CD in Tractrix 1000 Ca 110 dB and finally JBL 2119 8 inch midbass/midrange max 97 dB.
Wizzercone is no problem.

This seems quite heavy: 0028 8M400 - LF Transducers - Ferrite 8M400 : Eighteen Sound - professional loudspeakers
First let me just say - I have no idea what I'm talking about. Now that we've clarified my expertise - I suggest looking at a driver with an Alnico magnet.
Check out the Jantzen JA8008. New version called JA8008-HMQ. It is a solid 95dB sensitivity, and it sounds very nice. Thin paper cone, so it will have more comparatively 3rd order distortion as the SPL rises than speakers with stiffer or better damped cones.

Another good one is B&C 8NDL51. Well damped heavier cone, but it makes SPL the old fashioned way with powerful motor.

If 300Hz to 3kHz is your range, look at the 8MR500NDY which has 100dB sensitivity.

I have the 5MR450NDY from the same family and it sounds great. The 5MR actually goes to 15kHz.

THX for all the suggestions.
All the mentioned drivers have more or less bader specs than JBL2119 with real 97 dB.
We have measured 2119 with f ex Fostex FE203En-S ltd edition who claims that it have 99 dB. In fact they have the same sensitivity but JBL 2119 dont need corrections. FE203En-S is a little bit uneven in the response.
My open baffel have a modular insert for the satelite: HELOB The Final, en åpen baffel byggetråd
Whit this consept i made CNC inside-baffles for SEAS, Lowther, Fostex both with and without opening for supertweeter, f eks Fostex T500. I also have inside-baffles wihout cutout for alternative future midrange/fullrange drivers.
I have tested following drivers in addition to Fostex FE203En-S and JBL2119:
Lowther PM6A, fantastic driver, ca 93 dB real
SEAS Exotic, ca 93 dB real, smooth but a little bit "dull"
JBL2118, very good but need a small notch compared with 2119 who have very even FR.
JBL is never bragging specs, the are often very correct.
In a mockup we also measured Fane Studio 8: Fane Studio 8M luidspreker - Synthforum who claims 103 dB!!! That ist NOT correct. It is quite equal JBL2119. Fane have a ugly breakup.
The only suggestion i think is significant more effecient than JBL2119 is the AER driver.

And one more, Supravox 215-2000 EXC, fieldcoil.
99.9 dB @ 13V
This driver also have a broad peak who is not representative for the overall sensitivity. I have heard this fieldcoil version and it lacks a little bit attack IMO.
One alternative i wonder if could work is TAD1201. Then i have to move the little Tractrix 1000 horn with the 1 inch Radian 475pb-be over the baffle but what about the distance between them. Another issue is the crossover frequency, i think the minimum for the tweeter here is 2500 hz?
TAD TM-1201
TAD TM-1201
Not bad, but the sensitivity in the lower midrange is falling significant.
Compared With 2118/2119 i think the effective sensitivity after corrections is quite close.
Fs is very high on this driver compared With JBL.

main reason is the smaller cone area, hence less acoustic loading in the lower midrange. this driver is one of the higher bandwidth efficiency product on the market (Fs/Qes).
What is the low freq range you are looking for and is the application open baffle? If so, the PRV 8MR500NDY I mentioned earlier has a higher 0.75 Qts which may be better for OB than Qts ~0.35 drivers that have been mentioned here.
