Not many are talking about STONER ROCK over here.
I might kick it off by naming some local heroes: Thulsa Doom (original crew), Stonegaard and Hellacopters
Otherwise; KYUSS (forever the greatest), Fu-Manchu, Queens Of The Stone Age are some of my favourites. In my opinion, Kyuss and Fu-Manchu defined the genre and QOTSA are now making it big comercially and "house-clean".

in New York, two radio show hosts "Opie and Anthony" did a routine every afternoon called "STONER SPELLING BEE" -- (do they have spelling bees in Scandinavia ? -- they do in Minnesota which is part of Sweden).
Opie and Anthony can now be heard on satelite radio -- they were banished from the freeware version of radio when they did something naughty in the back of St. Pat's Cathedral in NYC.

I don't know about any spelling bee activity here in scandinavia, but I wouldn't be surprised if there where. Did Opie and Anthony play some good stoner rock on the radio then?
I think there might be a confusion in the naming but to me stoner rock is being played by bands like Hawkwind, that also made the best stoner rock album to this date, Space Ritual.

Love the Hellacopters though not sure I'd slot them with the Stoners, at least not the early releases. Right behind you on the KYUSS though, great band. QOTSA? Maybe the Desert Session releases, really can't get into the recent MTV fodder. I'll toss one in the hat: Men of Porn. The dirtiest, heaviest cover of Motorhead's 'Sister' you'll ever hear, not that it's a particularly crowded field. 😉
Hellacopters,; maybe more hard rock, but they're atleast stoner-ish 😉 Good music anyways. I wouldn't really call QOTSA for stoner either, but because of the way they where spawned (from the Kyuss evnvironment) I tossed them in.. Hawkwind is more Space Rock, and was new to me, but I see that they have been around some time. I'll definately check them out 😉

Is definately stoner (atleast with the original crew; the original vocalist quit, and he was the key member)
They released two great albums:
The Seats are Soft But the Helmet Is Way Too Tight (2001)
...And Then Take You to a Place Where Jars are Kept (2003)
These guys are more hard rock, but have a little stoner/desert theme going:

These guys belong more in the metal camp, and hove (so far) only given out one Album ("Arrows" (2005) Available on vinyl!)
They have a new record coming out any day, and are definately worth checking out:

Kyuss..... I'm a huge fan of "demon cleaner".... I sampled a number of others of theirs and they all sucked the big one. Can you possibly recommend a few others of theirs that are actually worth a damn?
As far as stonner rock goes, nothing... and I do mean nnnnnnnnnnoothing.... can even approach Iron maiden. Put that on and smoke a fatty.... time stands still my friend, it takes you places.
PS: planet caravan by you know who.
Quick story:
Friend with low tolerance, finally pulled his head out of the toilet a few hours later..
Just for a laugh, I put on riders of the storm by the doors.. and said "listen to the whisper"
It took all he had to pull a pillow over his head an scream "shut it offfff..... shut it offfffffffff"

Re: Re: The Great Stoner Rock Thread
Have you listened to "Blues for The Red Sun"?
IMO there best album.
For Stoner Rock I also dig:
Masters Of Reality
Melvins
Flaming Lips
As for Fu Manchu...I spent an entire ski season with them on my MP3 player - kick as downhill skiing music!!

Someone will have to explain to this old guy what "Stoner Rock" is. From the title, I thought, "Grateful Dead, Yes, New Riders, Quicksilver, Canned Heat, Cream, Doors, ..." but that's apparently not it.
I figure it's whatever you can trip on. Some you mentioned are good.. but it's still an active movement if you know what I mean. Nirvana.. Pearl Jam Ten (everything on it) ... alot from Tool, such as Third Eye and Schism.
Of course, I also think it goes without saying, the old classics like Cream "White Room" and Animals "House of the Rising Sun"... well, they're just in a league of their own, I think they call it the sixties.

Well, geez, for some people that would include The Carpenters.
.. and for alot these day's it's probably "Trance" junk..
Should give a listen to an oldy from Iron Maiden, "Strange World".

To be a "stoner" Music has to be a little more cult'ish than Carpenters😀 😀 Personally I can "stone" away for hours listening to Soundgarden's "Superunknown" or Pearl Jam's "Vitalogy"

Least we forget Joplin and Hendrix. While not in the same class at all I'd have to nominate Alice In Chains too, Steve Miller.. and the Eagles maybe?
Yep you areLeast we forget Joplin and Hendrix
right ClassD4sure!! Janis and Jimmie were the true stoners!!!
Not to mention Pink Floyd, ofcourse!!! I just filled my collection with a rare UK Live album from the early 70's!!! Watching the local fleamarkets pay's off!! Vinyl ofcourse!!
Steen 😉
Hi SY. Pretty good overview:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoner_rock
Be lead not astray, Hendrix, Joplin or bands like Pearl Jam are no more Stoner Rock than Quicksilver Messenger Service. Think heavy metal - no tall hairs or geetars aimed at the sky - almost crushed beneath the weight of THC and you're in the ballpark. Generally lethargic and heavy heavy heavy. Olympic-qualifying drug use is a beneficial but not sufficient requirement.
