I'm contemplating a th-spud clone. I know the Tang Band w8-740p is the standard driver. Can any comment on how the 8" Alpine type-R would work in this cabinet? It looks like a better driver than the Tang Band but I don't know enough about tapped horns to be sure if this is a good application for it...
Before you could model this using Horn Response, you would need to know the voice coil inductance (Le).

Which type R? when I do a search it returns different model numbers that show Le and much more: http://support.alpine-usa.com/products/documents/OM_SWR_S06212011.pdf

Hi,
Does it fit physically? The SWR-843D (3.7 + 3.7 Ohm) simulates fine in Hornresp in a single TH of equivalent dimensions, so it would probably work in the TH-SPUD if it fits.

Regards,
The physical size is very close to the Tang Band. In fact, the mounting depth is a bit shorter. It should fit fine from what I can tell.
It doesn't matter if it fits or not. You first have to make sure its T/S parameters result in a decent response. Copying a design and throwing in a different woofer normally results in poor performance. Use Horn Response and work up a design specific for the drivers you want to use.
Hi JLH,
Post #7: "It doesn't matter if it fits or not...".
The response is slightly better than the response w/ the original TB W8-740P. I always found it interesting how much ripple there is in the Hornresp output SPL of this particular design; but, this will change when we add damping, and active bandpass filters. I need to take another look at my files it has been a while that I looked closely at this. Right now I just cannot find the time to do that. Oh, and by the way, it does matter if it fits 🙂.
The OP should work through the details in geitmans' thread: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subw...ped-horn-th-spud.html?perpage=25&pagenumber=1 I have no doubt, that the TH-SPUD would make a great sub w/ the Alpine SWR-843D.

As you already know, Danley does not use the W8-740P in the TH-SPUD. They use a custom sourced high excursion 8" woofer. My main point was for people not to copy the TH-SPUD plans and throw any woofer in it. The model needs to be reworked for the chosen woofer. The Alpine R series are very good woofers, but they also cost more than the TB. Both when optimized in a tapped horn will be within a couple dB of each other. Really not much difference.
