Teac X1000R

Good morning-

I’m interested in purchasing a Teac x1000r reel to reel and one is available locally. The seller says that everything works. FF however engages but stops, if that makes any sense. I’ve owned a few r2r decks in the past but wonder if this particular one is easily serviceable- by a tech. Also wondering if what I am describing as an issue indicates a particular fault with the machine.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Finding a technician who specializes in tape decks at all can be difficult. Then, they often have a long backlog of machines to work on.

If you go to a more general technician, some will not wish to work on open reel at all, and some may agree to do it who probably shouldn't. That point is especially applicable to the X1000R. Tape tension has to be checked and set to spec using a Tentelometer, which is not equipment the average technician has to hand. As far as I've seen, they're no longer easy to find or cheap to buy.

A properly serviced X1000R is well worth owning (arguably - as some tape people are picky indeed), but getting there is the problem.

An earlier model TEAC A is more robustly built and easier to work on, both for techs and owners.
