TEAC VRDS 10 intermittent drawer problem

About one in three times on start up my VRDS 10 fails to open the drawer. The display shows open and the light flashes for five seconds or so but there is no action what so ever. The player then automatically tries once more to open the drawer before giving up. The problem is the same from either the remote control or the open/close button on the player. Twelve months ago I replaced the drawer drive belts with no problems and this problem has only just started. When the open command is recognised the drawer opens smoothly with no problems.

Any ideas where I should look?

Usually 95% of problems like this are mechanical.

If a belt was slipping you would probably still hear the motor. Maybe the loading motor has a dead spot causing intermitent operation or maybe there is a problem with a microswitch or leaf switch that is giving an incorrect logic level and confusing the system control.

You need to measure the voltage across the loading motor to see if its present and the motor isn't turning.

If there is no voltage you need to start "at the other end" which means checking the system control "motor out" lines change logic state when the tray is supposed to operate and work from there.

I think it will be mechanical though.
