Tantalum VS CC & metalfilm

Hy, could anyone paste your experiences on changing anode resistors from tantalum to metal film or CC, leaving all other system unchanged. What i'm interested is Riaa PHONO Stages.

Huge difference. Only there is little point listening to other people's opinions as there is too much personal preference involved. You'll just have to bite the bullet, buy a few resistors and try them out yourself. It won't cost you even as much as a decent lunch.

I understand that but it would be very interesting for me to hear yours opinion, for example in more detail.😉

As there seem to be less choice in tantalum, at least in through hole components, it's probably easier to make generalisations. Metal films and carbon comps are much more variable. I first heard tantalums in '84/85 and was stunned by the improvement they offered in comparison to what i was using at the time. Don't know if this counts as "accurate" as they are just too different. They bring up tiny details and have lots of air. Very audible in low level circuits such as anode/drain resistors in MC stages. Compared to a nice metal film like Caddock they seem coloured but in a very pleasing to my ears way.

Carbon comp and carbon films are mostly not my taste. I can enjoy Rikens but find Kiwame almost unusable.

Only used Shinkoh and AN. Apart from the fact that AN have magnetic end caps i don't think there is too much difference.

Hopefully you will get more opinions as not everyone likes them.

Stock up before the environmentalists slam production. Tantalum is an environmental disposal problem. Ironically a mobile phone, Ipods etc contains stacks of tants, so much for barmy-do-gooder madness.

For better bang per buck I use overrated by power metal film resistors with low temperature coefficient. However, bulk metal foils would be much smaller, but that does not matter for tube gear: it does not go to cosmic stations, and other parts like transformers overweight them greatly anyway.

I think the point is that the RoHS hysteria could whisker away those tants too.

More on topic, how about 'NI' wirewounds? Tolerances too wide?
