Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I asked in this forum some advice on how to go around rebuilding Tannoy Arden (Legacy) Speakers and any advice on building a Super Tweeter.

Orginal posts here

and here

The build is finally complete and I am adding some photos of it to share with forum members

Wow this looks awesome. I see the new cabinet is a little taller deeper and slimmer than the originals how did you go about the new crossovers? Awesome build. And quick! You must have tons of skills. That crossover seems super complex btw, don’t want to know the cost. Are you happy with the sound? Any measurements? And what did you do with the original cabs and xo?

I had to make the Ardens slimmer because my wife's apartment doesnt have the space for the wide cabinets of the original Ardens. I kept the vlume of the cabinet the same as the original but now the speaker is a bit taller and the tweeter is at ear height. No changes to the Arden crossover design, I simply replaced the original caps with ones sourced from Jantzen Audio. For the super tweeter, the crossover is a simple affair thats being "additive" at 8Khz onwards.

This is now part of a 5.1 system the rear surrounds are B&W 702 Speakers and the Ardens being the main.

Took about 2 weeks from start to finish and I had my wife's help in building this. She also chose the Veneer to go on this speaker.

The Original cabs are in my home in USA. Available for sale at a very cheap price to anyone interested. I am using the original crossover, just replaced some caps. The crossover is complex because the Tannoy Ardens allow you to select various crossover points using a little push pin in front of the cabinet. The crossover uses point to point soldering and isolated paths for each crossover point so for any selected crossover point, the actual component is minimal. This is a second order crossover just four individual crossovers in a plate.

I dont have equipment to take measurements here and I cant guestimate with just my ears. But re-listening to some of my favorites, the speakers sound the same as the orginal box.
However the supertweeter is absolutely revealing. It adds a new layer of information that simply wasnt there before. Not very good for off axis listening, but would you buy these speakers to listen to them off axis ?

I highly recommend these super tweeters to anyone in search of such.

They look great, awesome to get the wife onboard in the build. Two weeks is pretty wild. I typically use two weeks just to find the necessary tools and another two just thinking about where to start. I’m surprised by the crossover to be honest, I thought the selectors was just various LPADs but seeing it now no wonder these speakers have a price tag. Great job in all, great looking grills as well.

I am only with my wife for 3 weeks, I am returning to USA this week and next time I will see her will be in March 2022. So we only had this much time and I wanted her to have enough time to get accustomed to the set up (HTPC with Rune + Rotel AV Processor and Rotel 5 Channel Amp). So we had to finish as quickly as we could. I guess I am lucky to be with someone who appreciates good sound and doesnt mind picking up some tools. But yes without such a deadline it would take me a couple of months to build this.

At the end of the build these are 62 kilos a piece, that was probably my biggest problem , moving things around.

Got the idea of the grills from the Bowers $ Wilkins 702s. There are 6 magnets on the grill and under the veneer. Getting them to align was a nightmare but it worked out.

You seem to have quite the workshop being able to assemble this quality build in such short time. How did you get the joints in the veneer to align so good? And stain as well must take time I'm surprised it’s even possible to put together such a project in that time, must have been some serious planning behind it. Again great work, really inspiring. I’m in the middle of a large coax project myself but it’s not going as well lol.

I dont know how to answer this question, I think it isnt that difficult with the right tools and help. As for the veneer, It took 3 days to apply the stain. Actually its still not 100% dry.

Very nice, do you have more pics on the coax driver and maybe some measurements 🙂

No measurements, this unit is built for and with my wife in Poland, all my tools are in USA. I was able to borrow and buy some tools locally here in Warsaw but I dont have any measurement tools or software here.

I can post some more pics of the Coax Drivers later this week when I get the chance.
