Hello,
I’m interested in purchasing a prebuilt sun audio SV300BE from Japan. However the unit is 100v and I need a 120v for operation in the United States. Is it possible to convert the 100v to 120v without a separate step up (step down?) converter?
Is this a matter of swapping and soldering transformer wires? Or are the transformers themselves different? According to the sun audio website there are 3 versions: 100v, 120v and 240v which you must specify before ordering the kit. So I assume it is a whole different transformer. I hope I’m wrong.

Ha ha..... you need to check if the primary winding of the power transformer whether or not it has extra tapping for 120Vac. If not, you may need to replace the transformer.

Thanks for your replies,
yeah, I figured I’d need a new transformer. I’m open to this solution. However I can’t seem to find which Tamura transformer is used in the SV300BE 120v version. I’ve emailed sun audio a few times but they don’t respond. Does someone who owns one know the 120v model number?
Oh, and this is Sun audio not Sun Valley (it’s confusing), which victor Kung distributes. I bought the lundhal 1931ag and sun valley phono from him earlier. Very nice guy.

Hmmm…after some additional research it appears I need to procure an SPT-150a Tamura transformer ( the “a” is the 120v designation). However this part does not appear in the Tamura site and I cannot find it anywhere. Has anyone had luck purchasing one of these?
A decade or so ago, a friend of mine somehow destroyed his power transformer while replacing the intermittent Chinese tube sockets with NOS USA ones. He was able to purchase a new transformer from Sun Audio: sunaudio@big.or.jp
Thanks! I’ll keep trying them. I’ve emailed a few times over the last week but haven’t received a response. They have a phone number, perhaps I’ll call them. I’m unsure if they speak English though.
An external bucking transformer could be an easy solution: https://sound-au.com/articles/buck-xfmr.htm
