I'm currently working on some wiki pages. First I made some bass horn pages, and there is quite a lot of info in there now. Now I have started on some subwoofer pages.
I see this as a resource where beginners can find all the common questions answered right up front. Instead of answering the same questions over and over, we can say "that question is answered in the wiki, have you seen it?" Yes, people should search first, but this is a daunting task at times, especially when starting.
Do you ever find yourself sounding repetitive on posts? Saying the same things over and over? ... perhaps you should write a wiki page!

I hope this will stir up some more wiki activity.

Excellent work.
The sub intro matches my views (formed from lots of reading and a little practice).
I'm nervous of editing your work, but would like to add that if your AV amp has bass management it is easy to have the 'no compromise' solution > actively bi-amp a pair of woofers AND have a massive mono sub for movie LFE only.

This is a wiki so anyone has the right to add and edit. Go for it! 😉
As long as it fits. If you want to put in something which is a different point of view, then you could add a link and say "click here for an alternative view."
I thought initially that it could be annoying if people delete your work, or mess it up, but what I'm finding is not many bother to contribute!
So far those who have added or edited have corrected mistakes and inserted parts that look as if written by the same person
I'm giving this thing a go for a while. I might end up putting an illustrated and more polished version on my website, but for now I'm trying this out. It's good to have input from others.

Paul : I like the wiki cos its SO EASY to use,and no worries with using dodgy buggy geocities pagewizard, etc. Even msword html files are abit funny and store multiple images[wasting space]
I think that linking to a few sites with info will save alot of writing eg
www.diysubwoofers.org
www.jlaudio.com 'tutorials'
Then you can add more to that, rather than duplicate whats already been written, taking hours off of your life for no reason
Mike.e😀

I don't know who added this, but "subwoofer" implies "underneath the woofer". Now, I don't know about all of you, but I don't think any woofer runs down to 20Hz.While the name implies a transducer to reproduce subsonic content ie below 20 Hz, this is not usually the case, although some subwoofers are designed for significant 15 Hz output, and some even as low as 10 Hz
A proper term for a driver playing anything under 20Hz is "infrawoofer", IMO.

Good point mike, I did actually link to diysubwoofers 😉
I plan to add more
My intention rather than to add to those sites, is in some cases create a simpler version, eg with the subwoofer types. Also I didn't completely agree with everything on diysubwoofers.org. I think its debatable whether or not sealed subs have an audibly better "transient response" or not.
You're right, it's very easy to use ...

under is one interpretation, but I think the intention of the word "subwoofer" is that it contains subsonic content ie down to 20 Hz.
I think the main thing is that everybody knows what everyone means

Just had a thought - perhaps many don't know how easy it is to add a wiki page ... just go to the page where you want to create the link to the wiki page, then click on "edit ..." then copy the format of the others
Then click on "save" ... as the page is not yet created, it will have a ? mark there ... click on it and it will go to the page, type in that window, then click save and there you have your added wiki page!
I've just started a subwoofer review section, I'll add a template then members can edit the text and do reviews of subs they have seen, drivers, amps etc.

UPDATE: the subwoofer review section now has some more content, and the template is complete
so feel free to add subwoofer reviews!!!

20Hz certainly isn't infrasonic, actually neither is 16Hz at high enough SPLs
We have supertweeters, tweeters, midranges, midwoofers, woofers and subwoofers.
A sub plays frequencies lower than those played by the woofer (hence "sub" aka "under" the woofer).
When I got into speakers 30 years ago, a subwoofer had an Fs of 20Hz or below (almost unheard of) and a supertweeter was capable of beyond 20K. How those things changed, I don't know but I still cringe when I here the term sub being used to describe a woofer and supertweeter to describe something used with a high crossover point.
My 2 cents, which is now worth a nickel after all these years.

If this is a contest, I built my first DIY speaker 40+ yrs ago.
Which is why I posted supertweeters, tweeters, midranges, midwoofers, woofers and subwoofers.
With the concept of subwoofer being something playing frequencies lower than those being played by the woofer

Greets!
In my case, for the reason you quote.
GM
GM are you saying you don't get involved in the wiki as others can edit what you put in?
I've put in a heap of pages and the only changes people have made to anything I've put in was where I asked for input / corrections, etc and they did and then told me.
I figure that if it ever turns into a problem, I'll just put the pages I wrote on my website, but its hard to get people to get involved at all, which surprises me, there is so much knowledge in this forum.
Someone like yourself actually knows what he is talking about!

paul,
Good work. I wanted to add on some tips for enclosure construction there myself and contribute a bit but I cant seem to figure this hi tech wiki out.

Ok some tips then ... it's actually quite easy, easier than web pages.
Find the page you want to add link to the new page and click on "edit" down the bottom
Then name your link like this:
((Name of your link))
click on "save" and it will show a ? after the link since the page now needs to be added - click on the ? and it brings up the page ... edit it and save and you have added a page
headings are done like this:
= main heading =
==== minor heading ==== (note spaces added)
'''bold'''
''italics''
links are done like this [http://www.insert.link.here name the link]
tables are done like this
||cell 1||celle 2||
That's most of what you need to know 😉

Just added a new page on group delay:
http://www.diyaudio.com/wiki/index.php?page=Group+Delay
One more tip ...
If you make a little wiki page with say a definition of something like Group Delay, you can link to it from any page by just putting it in brackets ((like this)). This is a quick and easy way to link pages. If the link is to a page that is just one word eg. WinISD then it will automatically be linked whenever you enter WinISD.

That, and I would tend to change other's input if I didn't agree 100%, which isn't really fair to anyone, so prefer to 'agree to disagree' in a thread, and if you or others want to present it all unedited in a wiki or personal webpage, that's fine by me.
