Uhhh..ok this is the 1st time I've ever used this stuff and since there's no directions..do you leave the plastic/vinyl looking cover on? If so does it matter if it faces the heatsink or the IC?

Never seen a sil-pad with a 'cover'. Pic? Or a link?
Generally, I'd think not, but I'm not sure what you are describing.

The Silpad has a blue side that's not covered with a clear protective film of plastic & a black rubberey side that is covered with a clear easily removable clear protective film. It's obvious the clear protective film is meant to be removed because it's oversized and easily peels off. But the blue side is thicker and cut to the same size of the black side. I think it's suppose to remain but it can be taken off with a lttle more effort. Hope the pic helps.

I take it the black side has adhesive on it? I've never used sil-pad that is self adhesive...so I'm just guessing. I have however used non-adhesive silpad...and it's blue on BOTH sides. (In fact it's only blue.) That blue is most likely part of the whole assembly.
