I'm looking for a step down transformer to use with my 500w Bash subwoofer amp (total current draw 600w @ 120v).
I see these transformers on ebay, but I'm unsure if they can be used... The response from the sellers are inconclusive to say the least...
An example:
SK 20E Voltage Step Down Transformer Converter 220 240V to 100V 1000W for Europe | eBay
Can these transformers be used for audio amplifiers such as my one? 😕

Hi,
Its hopelessly too small for the job. Anything that weighs 100g
cannot be 1000W, or anywhere remotely near that sort of rating.
This 600VA auto transformer weighs 5.5Kg :

No way that does 1000W, more like 10W. It'd run a shaver probably.
What you want is one of these (not necessarily that auction-item, but that model is widely available from many vendors, often for about $70). They weigh about 10kg. Make sure you get one that's properly grounded - the one you linked has no ground pin.
I have two, and use them to run a US-bought AV receiver (nominally 700W but closer to 50W average in normal playback), 1000W-s monolight strobe (which really does pull 1kW for about 2.5s during recharge) and a Kitchenaid mixer (650W continuous load). Works flawlessly. You can also get 1kW versions for maybe $5-10 less, the only real benefit is they're maybe slightly smaller/lighter.

100 VAC secondary will give 141 volts peak DC so is a bit too high for your application.
I think he means 120VAC.
When we moved from The United States down here to Argentina some eight plus years ago, everything we had was 110VAC......
Argentina is 220VAC so we wound up buying half a dozen of these Auto transformers.........my father-in-law had one custom wound, two wire 220 primary to a 220 center-tap (For a clothes dryer).
My whole system(Amp, pre, tuner, DVD, 32" TV) runs off of one 750W version. I tallied up some 550 Watts in total, a decent margin. It has been running 24/7 since. We also have a 3000 watt version.

PS it seems that DIYA is breaking eBay links. That link showing above is NOT what I put in my post, it has a whole bunch of extra crap added to it that means it doesn't resolve to an item. Try searching item numbers 300765012973 or 151226273032 for examples of the transformers I'm recommending - pasting an item ID into the eBay search box will get you there.
Thats unfortunate. What about this one? (261138889228)
2000w is way overkill btw. The amp draws 600w peak, so 1000w is more than enough.

Still seems way too small, and it's not earthed. It must be earthed if the devices you are connecting have an earth pin, otherwise you are creating a safety hazard.
There's a 1kW version of other one I linked above (known good) at 310876866084; it's even slightly cheaper than the one you linked.
What is the power supply on your amplifier? Most importantly, does it have PFC? If not, then the 2000W (actually 2000VA) transformer will be only just sufficient and a 600W transformer would be grossly undersized. The reason is that with the classic linear power supply arrangement (transformer-rectifier-capacitors), it only pulls current right at the peak of the mains waveform, so you get very short, very large bursts of current.
