Spraque caps ...any good? (old ones)

I had a huge score today. I was at a hospital surplus store and for $5 each I got 4 huge power supply units...for lasers! Anyway, in these units are some nice 50V 43,000uF Sprague blue electrolytic caps. Just wanted to know if they are any good for making power supplies. They are huge and look real cool...just wanted to know if they are decent. Thanks!

Spraque is a great name in caps.
The only problem I forsee is the date code
you might have to pre-form these since they might
have been unused for a long time.

ok...so I just have to bring the voltage up slowly on the caps? I don't know how old they are...I'm gettings 10-20 years...they look really nice and shiny though... Can't wait! Out of curiousity...how much are they worth?

Yes, bring the voltage up slowly.
As a surplus dealer I would sell the caps for
$5.00- $6.00 depending on size.
There should be a date code on the cap
near the bottom, something like 8244
44th week of 1982
I now have some 26,000uf at 75V I'm selling at
$6.95 but there made by Phillips
I always look for high uf's and at least 50V but would
like 75 or higher best

I bought some of those Phillip Cap from you before. Does those need to bring voltage up slowly? If yes and I don't do that, what would be the consequence?

Thanks for the reply steve. Let me know if you find any 500 VA 25-0-25 transformers for me. :-D

I checked the date code on the caps 9235
meaning they were made the 35th week of 1992
Yes, It would be a good idea to bring the voltage
up slowly using a variac or an AC supply.

Whenever I look inside any Madrigal (Mark Levinson) equipment, I always see Sprague caps, Extralytics beeing better type.
