At what point does one need to use the higher current options?

Speakon connectors are designed not only for high current but also (presumably) to withstand the rigors and abuse of commercial application. If you're talking about a stay-at-home system, they may not offer that many real advantages over traditional binding posts & banana plugs of decent quality, which I think are typically rated at around 20-30A or so?

Sub channels handling 3 or 4 kw I am sure need to higher current models but what about mids taking about 1.5 kw?

Figure the speaker current, and then check connector specs for current.

I have never seen problems with NL4 or NL8 connectors on large PAs running speakers in parallel.
Don't think it's a problem.
