Speakers or drivers for an non heated garage

Hi all,

I want to make simple speakers or install existing speakers for a garage. The garage may be 30 feet by 300 feet with high ceeling.

Any recomendations it will be used for a bluetooth source.

If cheap I would like to try large woofers.

Thanks,

Walter

Hi Walter!

If the speakers will be subject to extremes of temperature and humidity in the garage then a DIY design would have to seriously take that into account.

Would passive speakers (to use with an external bluetooth equipped amp) suit your purpose? That would be the simpler scenario for DIY.

"If cheap" - what is your budget?

"Large woofers" - how large? For a garage of around 9 m x 90 m, the bigger the better I would think.

I would like to have 10 inch or more woofers. I have to check what exists for exterior use.

By cheap i mean less that 500$ project.

Yes I would go passive.

That is a really large space. You would either need a number of distributed speakers,
or just mount a few speakers in the areas that you would use most.

Mount the speakers on the wall around 6 feet off the floor, not way up on the high ceiling.
Remember the total impedance per amplifier channel should be safe for the amp used.

That is a huge space.
No Home HiFi setup will work there, think theatre/large Club or dance hall/sports/gym setup.
10:1 extreme difference practically forces you to a distributed sound system.
Or a bidirectional line array setup installed at center and firing both ways

Fir reference: in the 80s I custom.made a PA system for the Moscow Circus when they toured Argentina.

They joined 3 regular Circus tents plus rectangular truck type canvas strips for a covered space 45 meters wide by 95 meters long.

I used 16 evenly spaced columns all around, hanging from chains from the very high ceiling, inclined 45 degrees to point at audience.

Each column had 8 x 6" by 9" dual cone speakers mounted edge to edge, columns had to be long but narrow so as not to obstruct vision.

For Bass I evenly spaced 16 1x15" subwoofers under people's seats.

When they played the 1812 Overture the cannon shots made people jump 2 feet in their seats.

Not sure you need much less than that.

Maybe at least 4 evenly spaced woofers plus accompanying 4 full range or satellite speakers.
And even so ...

You will have phase and time delay issues.

Well, Canada is a big place and you guys have a special kind of cold (in NWT, etc), sooooo...judgment prevents assuming temperatures. What you could do is bury the LF drivers like that old Crabbe horn. Except, in your case, shifted down so that the driver lives deep enough to stay 45-50F 🙂

As a fellow Canuck, I don't have anything special in terms of the speakers in my garden shed, and they work fine. Electronics, however, are a different story, and some stuff gets fussy when the temps dip too low! One note on the speakers though, replace the grill cloths with aluminum screen, or fine hardware cloth! One winter, I had red squirrels find the bass port made an excellent front door to their new winter den, and they proceeded to stuff the speaker with a mix of shredded leaves, paper towel, and maple keys! 🙁

Yes > Avoid paper cones + foam surrounds, OR use 'rubber spray' to fully coat the front of cones.
A 'handy hint' I have mentioned in other threads is to coat the 'flexible cone wires' with motor oil > WD40 is too thin.
Another possible protection would be to internally secure some large 'silica-gel' packs.

Just as a different approach, this kind of setups are designed for warehouse installations.
Not saying you buy one but to adapt the idea: you can hang small light satellites and add a couple subwoofers on the floor.

OR as suggested above, get a couple used large Pa type systems (nobody wants them any more so they cost peanuts) and set them along one wall.

There's people offering them for free (or a nominal price, say $100) on condition you remove them.from their property.
