I've built a stereo to take to work. It's a Sony head unit,22w.x4,a 326 watt switching power supply, and 2 very old KLH 4" bookshelf speakers(8 ohm). It's all in a large plastic toolbox, except the speakers. My wife thinks it's hilarious, but I like it.The speakers, however, make it kind of ungainly.I'm trying to figure out whether I should remove the speakers from their enclosures and mount them in the toolbox,or buy some 4 ohm speakers and do the same.I even have a little room to build enclosures inside the toolbox-small ones.I'm not getting the volume or bass I'd like without distortion, although the head unit does have 5%THD.I'd appreciate any suggestions that you people of experience can offer. And I'm pretty thick-skinned,so give it to me straght if you must. Thanks,
John

Check www.partsexpress.com. They have some small, full range drivers that can be used in an enclosure or for infinite baffle use, and they also have ample inexpensive tweeters/small woofers that can be used to create small two ways. Check the tech talk projects section. Theres one project in there I can think of that costs next to nothing to build, and may be small enough to fit in your toolbox. In any case, just dont expect too much in terms of bass response. Just experiment and have fun with it.
