Speakers cheap enough to give away.

Hello there.

I am looking at building some speakers that are on the lower end of the budget scale. Most of the budget minded designs use drivers that are not easy to get hold of in the UK, the import fees make them not viable as a budget solution.

I stumbled across the fact that RS components has a reasonable selection of the cheaper drivers at particularly good prices. (I also get 25% off there and free delivery due to University). Of the 'known' brands they seem to have a fair number of Visaton and Monacor Drivers.

I was hoping to see if you guys know any tried and tested designs using the speakers available from there.

here are all of the monacor and visaton ones they sell.
For example the sp-60 from monacor is a 'legit' driver that has been seen on a couple of designs on this site, the mini boominator is in fact using them.

Idealy I would like some bookshelf sized design with reasonable extension, though I would like to hear of any design using this subset of drivers, subwoofers, anything. Though the intention is that they should be cheap enough to give to friends and family as presents, as I have lots of interest in my previous builds. (lets say under 50gbp for the drivers)

One really nice thing about RS is that they should stock the same items for a really long time and have distribution centres around the world, so a budget design from these drivers should have maximum ability to be the 'goto' budget design for the UK/EU.

I had previously had a look around at their site, one of the issues is that the cheaper drivers that they have are non-brand and lacking any useful data, with most of the visaton, and some of the monacor ones it is possible to find the data.

This one I find particularly enticing, 17cm Visaton as it seems to be a good fit for a small-ish bookshelf speakers. They are already cheap, with 24% off and free delivery, as well as reliable UK wide stocking. Any known designs with these ,or the other similar ones on RS, or the cheaper ones on Blue Aran?

Hi polop,

If you can find yourself Visaton WS 17E -4 ohm version and Monacor DT 99,
I can give you plans of a project of mine for an 11 litre closed box that I did
for a friend. The 4 ohm bassmid has better sensitivity and lower Qts. Very nice
sounding speakers.
