Hi all,
I've been lurking around this forum since last fall and have always had an innate need to build things. Since technology has always been close to heart (first time soldering at around 2 years of age, etc.), I think it's high time I build myself some speakers. In fact, I'm looking to build two pairs of full range speakers: one pair for the office, so work will be less agonizing and another pair for the living room at home.
The problem is where to source the drivers. Ebay is one option, but the selection/postage costs aren't typically all that great and there's also Ljudia in Finland that carries some Visaton models, but I'd like to see if there any viable options for these.
I'm looking at this from a low price point, as my first projects are aimed at the very low end of the cost range. I'd like to spend more money and effort in building solid, nice-looking enclosures and not so much on the drivers themselves.

If you can tolerate a rather big enclosure (60 litre sealed), I think the Prestige version of SEAS 8 inch FR (FA22RCZ) from Hifitalo is a bargain.

I don't know what the price is on that side of the pond, but as excellent a performer as the FA22 might be, at over $140 USD each over here, I think they hardly qualify as a first time project, budget entry level price "bargain" candidate.
Sonido drivers fron Hungary. Extraordinary sound quality and price/quality ratio. My SFR175 walks over Fe166En. In direct comparison Fostex was a huge disapintment.
Thanks for everyone's input.
The Sonido drivers look interesting, as I've never heard of them before. For example:
http://www.sonido.hu/adat_pdf/sfr-175.pdf
The fall-off from 100 Hz and back is quite steep. How large should the baffle for something like this be?
Right now I'm still mostly looking at the Visaton FR10-8. The price is pretty much perfect and the frequency response seems, especially for the price, quite good -- albeit there is some weirdness above 6 kHz. How do people cope with this? Digital EQ? How evident is this range to the ear?

If you are looking for FR10, check also FRS8. Same price, maybe slightly less deep bass (well neither of these is a subwoofer), but better treble.
I ordered my Mark Audio chr-70 from here Strassacker: Speaker Building, Components
CHR-70 is a very good driver for the price, and also usable in a wide range of designs.

Yes, FRS 8 is a driver with great sound, much better then FR 10. I have them in backload horn and they are great, but have heard them also in pipe and was also very good.
The red one are my and black I did for a friend.

Pk2Carlos,
Nice BLH's with an FRS8! I have always wondered if these would work in a horn - do you have detailed dimensions of your horn you can share? What is the design frequency of these horns?
Thanks...

It is a Buschhorn, it is all over the internet, but to be sure here you have a copy with all details and author.

The Buschhorn design looks fairly good for the "tall, dark and handsome" -spec. What kind of frequency response and SPL are people getting out of this with the FRS 8 M? I'm not looking for super-loud performance, just as long as it's not a tin can fizzle. For mains in the living room, accompanied by a subwoofer, these would look great.
For the second application, what kind of enclosures should I plan to make for desktop use? As far as size restrictions go, max. height is 40 cm, max. width about 16 cm and max. depth around 25 cm.
A forum full of audio experts from whom to humbly ask for advice, who'da thunk it? 🙂

that was mesured not in an enclosure supposed to enchance bass. Just to see mid-high.
