Sony SS-AR1 Clone

Im bored and looking for a new project, browsing the web I found the Sony SS-AR1 and it have some nice reviews.
Sony is kind enough to publish the crossover schematic online so that part I know.
The drivers is most likley the D3004/6000 tweeter and 22w/8857T00 woofer.
Im not sure about the midrange, it's either the 15W or 15M/4531, a russian website says it's the 15M.

Does anyone have some more info about the drivers? are they stock drivers or maybe ordered to Sony specifications?

I know that the smaller sony SS-AR2 use the same midrange and tweeter as the AR1 but with a smaller 6.5" woofer ordered special by sony.

If someone know something about them but dont wont to publish it online send me a pm, I have lots of crossover schematics from different manufacturers that we can share, mostly "high end" with seas excel, scan speak revelator, and accuton designs. beryllium even..

Looking at the Stereophile review of this speaker my main concern is the 4kHz upper xo point. The D3004/6000 can go low, so an xo below 3kHz is a good starting point, but around 2kHz you can have 1 wavelength c-c distance and a much better directivity match with good dispersion, which is a good goal for domestic speakers imho. Sony uses the 15M version as a mid i think.

It's hard to not get good sound with drivers of this quality even with a half decent crossover, the Sony xo is a good one after all, but can be better.
Of course, you can build a clone with the original schematic for a fraction price if the drivers are not customized for Sony, and you can tweak it later if you feel the need.

Sony published a few AR1 construction pictures to illustrate the high quality of wood and engineering. The cabinet pictures show that Sony uses a rear port on the midrange air volume, and on the woofer pair.

I even found a 3d cad file to download.

I wacked together a simulation for a similar TM-WW design using high-value SB_Acoustics / Satori drivers.
About $470/speaker for:
--two 8" woofers SB23NRXS45-8 ported in 4cuft
--Satori MR16P-4 SEALED midrange
--SB26STCN-4 tweeter(small diameter for short C-to-C)
--standard grade crossover parts
--Zmin = 3.8 ohms

Someone in the cheap seats might want to work with these parts

Long time lurker first time poster;

You need to make more quality post like this before you can start a PM.

Very interesting. It looks like the midcone is not the paper slit paper cone.

A small investment by a large company like Sony. I wonder if it every sold in the 1000’s.

How do you like the sound of the speaker?

If I were to start on clean slate, I would do it I would do it with dual 26W 4867.

Or the new Purifi 8 inch woofers. These are least as good as most 10 inches or larger, at least in all the bottom octave (40Hz)

Thanks for your time.
