SONY SCD 777ES locked up

Does anybody know of a way to reset the controls on a SONY SCD 777ES? I put in a CD-R that had played fine before and the display said "unreadable" then when I tried to eject (remove) the disc the top loading door cannot open. Tried unplugging and plugging back in but no change. PLEASE help - I miss my player!

Get the service manual in order to know how to put it in service mode.

This works very often if your absolutely sure it's electrically locked up .... or knob-locked as we used to call it. First check for a backup supply to the main microprocessor... it may or may not have one, usually derived from a coin type cap. If it has discharge it slowly via a resistor. Check for residual voltage across ALL the main rails and discharge them if needed.
And then... seriously, but you have to be 100% sure there are no caps left charged up, such as to the FL display etc etc, THEN AND ONLY THEN, take some aluminium foil and press it over the whole PCB around the microprocessor and system control IC's and leave it for several minutes.
It's not madness, it's a workshop technique that can "fix" many problems like this. IC's can lock up and slight residual charge stops them reseting correctly when you keep powering it up. We are talking voltages in the 10's of millivolts here.
BUT YOU HAVE TO DO IT RIGHT.
Alternatively you can leave it for 24 to 72 hours and just see what happens.

I found a copy of the service manual and did the section 5 TEST MODE routine. All did what it was supposed to and thus got the display readout indicating "the key check terminated successfully" but player still has the same problem... I cannot understand the manual well enough to decide if I should try the "ADJUSTMENT MODES" - I removed the CD-R and the weight/puck when I took the top off as required to short the two terminal to get into the TEST MODE... no idea what to do now... display just reads "CLOSE" or blinking "UNLOADING"

“How did you know that?”

I have good technical understanding for these models (SCD-1/SCD-777es), these are the best players Sony has ever build and with the proper modifications they can sound better than any player costing over 10K.

It's fixed! the local TV/VCR repairman had a fuse 250V 1.6A... is there some risk as it replaced 125V 1.6A? The player works fine now. Also, curious about modifications - can it really make big difference? I have some pretty nice electronics BAT VK30-SE & VK200 + B&W 804S. I wish there was something I could do for you to return the favor for your advice. Thank you very much!

No need to return the favor, glad to hear that your player is working again.

Do you have a US model or European model? On the power supply is not an issue, however the main fuse on the AC board needs to have the correct voltage rating.

With the right modifications, YES!

US model I'm pretty sure as I bought the player new from a dealer in New Jersey. I did not touch the one fuse on the board directly over the 2 transformers.

The fuse that was replaced with a 250V 1.6A instead of the original 125V 1.6A was one of the 3 fuses on the board next to the transformers that has all the big capacitors.... THANKS AGAIN!
