Small subwoofer drivers like 5" Tangband

Hi guys,

First question is, what do you think of the Tangband W5-1138SG?

I am thinking of building a small, well mini, monitor. I want to try and get as deep bass as possible from about a 5-6liter cab for the bass. I don't need huge SPL but I would like it as high quality as possible.

I was thinking of using the W5-1138SG and then using a active bass boost to give about +6dB at 40Hz. It can take about 30watts RMS so that should be alright for normal listening levels in the near-field I think.

I was waning to Xover 1st order (2nd if I have to) around 400Hz to the w3-871's I have so it needs to not have a bad lower midrange either.

TB are about the only people I could think of who make drivers for boxes that small but if you know of other good drivers please let me know. Anything up to 6” is alright and I will have about 30watts of power.

I have a buddy who builds a lot of speakers and he was raving about these (or maybe it was the 6.5" version) recently.

He says they will play low, loud, and clean. But not very efficient.

I'll drop him an email about them, see what he says and which version he is using.

edit: He says:

It's the 6-1/2 W6-1139SC, the older version of the current 1139SG. Don't know why they changed it.
A little more Xmax with the SG.

So if you can go with the larger dirver, it should make you very bass happy!

Thanks, I did consider that but it didn't have quite such deep bass in a 6 liter cab. However, it does have twice the power handling so if I could get more amp power I can more than make up for it 🙂 Super mini speakers here I come!

Maybe I should start a new thread for this but are there any good and cheap amp modules that give about 50watts? I was planning to go with a 25watt 41Hz Amp3 kit, but if I use the 6" driver I should go for more. I know there are gainclone amps about that power so any recommendations for cheap and good modules? I would prefer digital though really so they are more efficient.

Hmm it looks like that solution is about 5dB down at 70Hz already, or am I missing something? Is there any more information on it, have you made one, got any pictures?

As for my buddy who uses the W6, I'll contact him again. He did say that it was in a box that shouldn't work with a port tuning all wrong, but sounded great.

Will see what info I can get.

Thanks mate, I was thinking of going closed because a port down at about 40Hz just won't fit in a 5L box unless its diameter is tiny and I am going for quality here.

-- No you are right. But the sensitivity is better! It can play "very" loud down to 50Hz because of the passive radiators. But, it is not very good below 50Hz. TB is much better there.
The midrange is also good so you can use a tweeter crossed at 3k

Q=0,71 in aprox. 10l sealed box with average stuffing

In 5-6l box I would advise to use with Linkwitz transform circuit
