Loss of space meant my last DIY 3-way speakers had to be dumped, and i rather lost heart. But I kept the drivers and those used for midrange were actually mid-woofers, the scanspeak 15W8530K01, which I liked very much and went nicely with the tweeters. So I was wondering about re-using them for a pair of small sealed 2-ways; I couldn't afford any other drivers of similar quality now.
Though I'm a bit concerned about the 'mid'-woofer designation; they are neither huge or exceptionally long throw. Perhaps they'd not be ideal, or maybe they would if complimented with a subwoofer (though it'd need to be fairly small).
Anyway, I'm only just starting to consider this, but just wondered if any more experienced members could spare me a sanity check first? Worth pursuing or just sell the drivers and start afresh with something else - probably cheaper but chosen specifically?
Cheers,
Kev

Troels has used it in a compact 2 way, he suggested vented to support the bass a bit more.

Ah, thank you both! Well that is certainly very encouraging and the perfect sort of size, too; well worth doing some work on this, then 🙂
It has been a while so I no longer have any design/simulation software installed, but 'somewhere' I have measurements of the actual drivers so should be able to get set up and have a play around with possibilities.
Thanks again, Kev

Just to add a small follow up to this old post: The scanspeak 15W8530K01 drivers did indeed work surprisingly well as little bass drivers (assuming modest SPLs are sufficient of course).
In fact on reflection they're probably better suited for that purpose than the mid-range role I'd previously used them in, capable as they were. Their main undesirable attribute is a fairly low sensitivity, which I believe is one of the potential trade-offs in achieving lower frequencies. So it makes complete sense to me now that their low frequency capabilities should actually be employed, rather than high-passed as they were as a mid-range.
Anyway, I had them in a test box for some time and now am going to employ them as small bass drivers in a near-field design. Here their sensitivity and excursion are more than adequate for the SPLs wanted, so I'm very happy with the outcome of this thread. Thanks to David and Andy for the encouragement!
