SB Audience Bianco 18SW450 or Bianco 15OB350?

Hey guys,

I've been torn between the SB Audience Bianco 18SW450 and 15OB350 for a long time. Intended for use up to 500Hz-ish, handing over to a horn loaded full range driver or MEH. Open baffle to start with, possibly boxed when I buy a house next year and can integrate with e.g. a false wall.

The 15" is marketed for open baffle, but it seems like the 18" has better factory measured FR. The 18" costs about 50% more here in Australia, and also has about 50% more displacement. I've been wondering whether that, together with the fact that the 18" has a cast frame, makes it a better value proposition.

A few forum members have experience with these drivers. Which would you choose, if you were starting over?

I have used 18sw450 and 12inch version of 15OB350 in different applications. 18sw450 as a subwoofer and 12ob150 for a guitar FRFR cab.
When it comes to bass extention there is no competition 18sw450 wins hands down. Since directivity seems fine below 500hz I would go with 18sw450 for your application.

That’s a good price assuming std. shipping isn’t to high.

At one point you could get them for less than $150 euros (obviously from a European country), but that isn’t true anymore.

Still, the GRS 18” are a better deal (at least where you can get them in-country), and maybe the better driver below 80 Hz objectively.

I had a look at shipping the GRS - many $100s, unfortunately. Parts Express is a bit of a tease for us Australians.

When I have a chance I'll post some sketches of what I have in mind. I've been making OS waveguides from papier mache, based on conical light shades. With roll back they end up in the 50 cm+ range so I can probably get away with the width of the 18SW450. I figure with that much displacement you could experiment with other topologies - perhaps even a cardioid setup very close to the wall (quadrapole) with either a waveguide top end or a full range LXMini style, but almost flush with wall.

With young kids I don't have much time to build enclosures and squeeze all the juice out of drivers. Splurging on more displacement for ease of construction is a way to trade money for time while still getting satisfaction from DIY.
