Hey Everyone,
Well my father in-law has just been finishing a house renovation and was getting rid of some old hi-fi equipment and asked if I wanted to grab any of it. There was this Rotel RB-956Ax 6 channel amp that grabbed my attention as I am in the process of building some amps for my new home theater setup.
Question is we don't know how old it is, how many hours its been run for etc etc. I have plugged her in and she sounds great thus far, I am running 4 channels bridged for 2 channels at 100w.
I am looking to replace the caps etc and perhaps do some upgrades, question is does anyone recommend some upgrades I should look at first.
I realize this is fairly vague, and I do have the schematics.
I have attached the pdf here for your perusal.
Any thoughts gents 🙂
Kind Regards
Archie

I owned one of these amps once. Not bad for an inexpensive medium power amp. I think it has 30 or 40 watts per channel depending on which revision you own.
I wouldn't bother upgrading, but replacing the PS caps is a good idea. I think these were manufactured in the late 80's.

Thanks Charlie, I was thinking about just swapping out the PS caps, I might replace some of the other electrolytics as well.
Thanks for the input

Hi,
There is the old adage "if it ain't bust don't fix it", probably applies here.
IMO its unlikely anything actually needs replacing, or can be improved.
rgds, sreten.
I've been there and done it, all new electrolytics and added bypass
caps to all the signal electrolytics. Difference ? Yes. Better ? Yes
slightly sharper treble definition. Significantly better ? Not really in
the big scheme of things for an amplifier well rated for sound.
