hi,
i'd like to build an active stereo 4 way speaker using minidsp as the active filter.
i havent figured out if i should use the 2x8 board instead of using two independent 2x4 boards. Its my understanding that the 2x8 board is better in that it has more processing capabilities than the 2x4 board, is this correct (one 2x8 board costs 50% more than two 2x4 boards if i understand things right)? To make that work i would need to purchase the 10x10 plugin if i go with the 2x8 board?
This is the bulk of my question though:
could i still use the REW wizard to measure my room and input the the calculated filters from rew to the 2x8 minidsp?
just to confirm, in this scenario am i better off with the 2x8 minidsp than two separate 2x4 minidsp? could you care to elaborate on which one i should choose and why?

Hi,
2x8 board indeed has more processing power, but it also has to process 8 channels 😉
To get a good overview of the features of 2x4 and 2x8 (which are actually related to the corresponding plugins) I recommend to have a look at the plugin overview tables.
For your application (4 way stereo) the relevant boards/plugins are:
Main difference between 10x10 and 4x10 plugin is samplerate: 4x10 uses 96kHz samplerate (10x10 and 2x4 use 48kHz), which cost processing power. Therefore only 5 biquads per channel can be used compared to six with 10x10 (and 2x4), though this is not that much of a problem in my opinion.
REW can be used for both 2x4 (with advanced plugins!) and 2x8 (all plugins!)!
I would go for the miniDSP 2x8 and choose 4x10 or 10x10 according to your personal preference (48kHz vs. 96kHz) 😉

is it possible to connect the cd player to minidsp( 2x8 or 8x8 ) via minidigi and then have in the output sub and woofer trough analog out , mids and highs trough digital out ?
cause i´d like to upsample mids and highs to 192k

miniDSP 2x8 + miniDIGI have one digital (stereo, 2ch) output via SPDIF. Thus only mids or highs could be connected via SPDIF.
If you have some electronic knowledge and at least a scope to troubleshoot you can grap digital I2S signals from the board and have 8 digital output channels. However you'll need I2S inputs at your DACS or use SPDIF transeiver.

thanks , unfortunately i dont have those skills , i thought minidigi allowed 2 digital outs 🙁 well one less dac for me to buy
