Can I use a heat gun for for de-soldering the fets on the MEHSA board? I've determined that 4 transistors in this amp are bad and need replacing. How can I solder the transistor back to the MEHSA board when I'm done?
Plan a. a small propane or butane torch will work better. Use something like a piece of metal to shield the rest of the board. they are relativly cheap, check harbor freight, or radio shack.
The heat gun is like a 1200 degree blow dryer. There is a good chance you will start to burn the board, I dont think it will work as fast as plan a.
You should check out perrys dvd. there is an extensive section on the mesha insulators. you could answer a lot of your own questions as well. It is well worth the money.

I use a hakko 850 hot air rework station ( 480 C ), and the tip of my Hakko vari-temp 928 soldering wand station. using helping hands to hold this hot creature. Just heat'em up on the bottom with the hot air wand and then flick them off with the solder wand tip. < cut leads of course..
Works like a charm every time, and the rework station has temp control so no open flames anywhere.
These were soldered in a reflow solder oven when they were built so should be no big deal. careful with the torch, they are fast, but they are also way hotter then is needed to do this sort of thing.🙂
