ok i have a quick question if any one out there can help. i have this fosgate 800 a2 that i purchased from a friend. he guaranteed it to work but i am unable to test it. i did however put it on a 12 vdc 1.5 amp power supply that i have for small projects and the amp did light up but the power supply went into cc when i tried to turn up the voltage. it was stable at around 10-11 volts with the amperage setting at full around 2 amps. is 1.5 amps not enough current to power on this amp? i ask because my power supply goes haywire when i turn up the voltage or is this amp fried?
I've never tried powering one up with a current limit of 2 amps. You'll need to try it on a larger power supply. If you don't have one and will have to connect it to a battery to test it, do so with a 20 amp fuse in the B+ line. This will help protect the power supply in the amp if there are other problems.
I think because the rail caps are trying to charge as it turns on that could be sucking up the juice.
That's possible but, generally, if the amp is left connected to the power supply long enough, it will power up after the caps charge. Again, I don't know what to expect with only 2 amps of current.
