Hello there,

Can anyone out there describe what record companies were doing when they took older Mono recordings and .....

1) reprocessed or rechanneled for stereo

2) issued a "Duophonic" disc, usually Capital.

I think it was more than just putting bass on the left and treble on the right.

Please advise and thank you in advance for any information.

They are shifting phase: left channel is passed though an all-pass filter that realizes continuous phase shift from 0 to 90 degrees from low to high frequencies, right channel is from 0 to -90 degrees. So low frequency is in phase, high frequency is out-of phase, medium frequencies 90 degrees apart, resulting in a "fancy" pseudo-stereo effect.
