Remove plastic cover from speaker binding post/terminal

Anybody successfully removed the plastic covers of these things? I am thinking of using a heat gun to loosen them up.

I've just cranked on the cap with pliers or a ratchet wrench to get it off, but if the cap is flimsy it may deform or crack.
This does work on captive Superior Electric binding post caps, which are polycarbonate and very rugged.
Once non-captive, you can use ring lugs crimped on the speaker wires, which are much better than fork type lugs.

A heat gun may melt the cap.
