I've now encountered many products with similar approach,
a LM337 from ON or Fairchild and a LM317 from STM... what's up with that? any advantage mixing brands like that?
Which brand sound the best (317/337)? I've personally used STM and F/ON and they've all worked good and reliable.
Seen it now in;
REGA Dac
NAD Silverline
Classic NAD
and a bunch others

It's probably just cost. The 317 is better than the 337, so if sound were the real concern,
they would use two identical 317 supplies on isolated windings and connect them in series.

BTW, Fairchild is owned by ON Semi.
BTW, you can do better than LM317/337 by going to the LT1963A/LT3015.
Yes, ok thx. Yes i know that ON owns fairchild nowadays.
Today replaced a pair of 317/337 (Fairchild and stm) from 2009 to brand new ON and couldn’t detect any difference, atleast not worse but before i had +18.02v / -18.22v and now +17.92 / -18.22v so slighty worse. Just for fun test. I didn’t check anything else. Noticed the new On to-220 pacakge is a bit thinner, i mean the metalpart is basically half as thick.

Direct replacement you mean?
Edit: now i see probably not with 5 pins, this a curcuit in a Newer Nad amp

Definitely not -- the max input voltage of the LT1963A is 20V.
The LTC regulators sounded much, much better than the LM3xxx in the "Great Regulator Bakeoff" for Linear Audio.
Why not (gasp!) perform the experiment and gather the data?
Build your equipment and listen to it with a great variety of regulators installed. Which brand sounds the best? to you, I mean

- Home
- Amplifiers
- Solid State
- Regulator and different brands...?
